    Proof argument
    Ellen's surname and parentage
Ellen's death certificate in 1941 gives us convenient direct evidence that her parents were Louie "Austen" and Nancy Davis, both of Marion County.

However, on the page previous to Joe and Ellen Williams' enumeration in 1880 Marion County, we find
    Louis and Nancy "Alston."

These are certainly Ellen's parents and siblings:

    • Alston sounds very like Austen.
    • The parents' first names are "Louis" and "Nancy," just as they are named in Ellen's death certificate.
    • The eldest child in the home is 16, and Ellen was 18 in her enumeration that year--the appropriate interval to be the next older sibling.
    • They are on the page directly preceding the Joe and Ellen Williams household, separated by only a few families.
    • Ellen is found in the Nancy Alston household in the 1870 census.
    • Ellen and Joseph Williams had a daughter, Nancy (Williams) Birney; Nancy's death certificate also offers direct evidence that her mother's name was "Ellen Alston."  [3
