Hi, Gina.
I suspect most, if not all, of the African-American \"Crowder\'s\" from Monroe County, GA are descended from the former slaves of John Terrell Crowder (1820-1895), prominent local politician, planter and colonel in the Confederate Army. I\'ve probably done more research on Colonel Crowder than anyone alive today. He\'s a key figure in my book, \"A History of the 31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry\".
He was the inventor of the \"Crowder Pea\". His plantation was in the Boxankle Community of Monroe County, along the Towaliga River. His house is still standing, I believe on the road connecting Boxankle to High Falls.
I seem to recall seeing a slave narrative from a former slave owned by Col. Crowder\'s father (Fred?). It was in the Georgia volume to the American Slave Narrative series published in the 1930s. Most good libraries should have this set.
I hope I\'ve been of some assistance. Good luck in your
noble endeaver!
Sincerely,
Greg C. White
