    • Obituary: After 30 Dec 1918, Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA; Mother and Babe Both Dead Cliff Innes and four motherless children have the deep sympathy of our people in the bereavement that came to them Monday, through the death of Mrs. Innes and one of a pair of twin boys to whom she gave birth on that date. The other twin is alive as this is written. Mrs. Innes had been in failing health for some time, and her husband brought her back here from Sterling, Colo., about ten days ago in hopes that a lower altitude would help her, but childbirth proved too much for one in her weakened condition. Funeral services were held this forenoon and the bodies of the mother and babe in the same coffin were laid to rest in Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Innes, a daughter of Mrs. Will Bucklin of this city, was aged 30 years, 8 months and 6 days, and had lived practically all her life in Smith county. Besides her husband, children and mother she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Arch Wilson, and two brothers, George ofWashington township, and John, of Athol. Only last week we carried a news item about the suicide of their father, Will Bucklin, at Byers, Colo.

    • Obituary: 11 Dec 1952, Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA; Smith County Pioneer:
Mrs. Alice Bucklin Laid to Rest Sunday Rites From Methodist Church; Burial In Fairview Cemetery The funeral of Mrs. Alice Buvklin was held from the Smith Center Methodist church Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ranold [sic] Plott officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Bucklin, 85, lived in Smith Center for 72 years. Alice Melinda, daughter of Vienna A. and George W. Gilmore, was born July 23, 1867 in Macon county, Ill., and passed away Dec. 5, 1952 in Smith Center. She came to Smith Center with her parents at the age of five years. On Nov. 28, 1884 she was united in marriage to Willard Livere Buckling. Six children were born to this union. Surviving are Eugenia, Mrs. Arch Wilson, Smith Center; and John, Colorado Springs, Colo. Preceding her in death were three daughters, Hattie, Mrs. Clifford Innes, in 1918; Minnie in childhood, and Alice Fern in infancy; and a son, George, who passed away in 1940. In 1892 they moved to Rawlins county, Kansas and resided there for eight years, then returned to Smith Center where she lived until her death. She joined the Methodist church while in Rawlins county and after returning to Smith Center, her letter was transferred to the Methodist church of that city. At her advanced age Mrs. Bucklin was still piecing beautiful quilts and doing fancy work. She also did her own letter writing. In addition to the children previously mentioned she is survived by two brothers: George Gilmore, Lebanon, Mo. and Tom Gilmore, North Platte, Nebr.; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, a large number of nieces and nephews and by a host of friends who mourn her departure."

    Notes:

    Birth:
1870 Macon Co IL, Alice was 11 months old, calculating to birth in July 1869

Geo W in a pension statement gives her birth as 23 Aug 1868.

Death cert also states 23 July 1867.

There is some conflict regarding Alice (Gilmore) Bucklin's birth date. The obituary offers a date of 23 July 1867; her father, in a pension statement, offers 23 August 1868; the 1870 Macon County, Illinois, census states that Alice is 11 months old, born the previous July. The latter, while secondary evidence, is direct evidence, given closer to the time of the event, and carries more weight. All accounts agree on the day as the 23rd of the month. Only her father's statement offers the month of August rather than July.

Alice married Willard Livere Bucklin on 28 Nov 1884 in Smith County, Kansas, USA. Willard (son of William Edwin Bucklin and Harriet Sophia Bradway) was born on 15 Nov 1863 in Iowa, USA; died on 25 Dec 1918 in Byers, Arapahoe County, Colorado, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Physical Description: As a boy, while at school in Smith County, one of Tom's eyes was shot out. He disliked handguns from that time.
    • Narrative: Written by Thomas M. Gilmore, in his hand, 1944
"A HAPPY EXPERIENCE March 1902 Experience of Thomas M. Gilmore [Written in his hand] My most happiest experience happened on the C. P. Dewey Cattle Ranch, in the S.W. corner of Rawlins Co., Kansas, in year March 1902. I was employed as ranch hand and lived in one of the ranch houses about 2 1/2 miles east off the ranch headquarters. I was at headquarters. It was snowing and blowing-what was known as the Kansas Blizzard. The wind was coming from the N.E. to S.W. Chauncy Dewey, the foreman of the ranch at that time proposed we all of us men available at that time, saddle up our horses and go out S.W. and look for new born calves. Some of the old cowhands; namely, Al Winds, Jr.; Jake Johanson; Ed Hubbert; John O'Neal and myself thought it wasn't safe to go out in the storm, but Chauncey insisted we go as the calves were in danger. But the boys said all right, if he would go along. So he said O.K., and we got our horses out. As I was not a regular rider, I was given an extra horse that was rode down, but had been a high-spirited horse. So we started right after dinner and went south across the Creek Bridge, then S.W. across the Creek bottom to the hill or raise over to the first canyon; then S. about 1 1/2 or 2 miles and found no cattle in this canyon. The storm was furious, but by going with it, we could go, but to face it was a problem. So Dewey proposed if we could go out over the Divide to the West we could hit another canyon and go down it to the Creek. So we started our horses the best we could, but suddenly we came to the head of a canyon. Supposed it was the other big canyon, so we took down, but after we bucked the storm for a mile or two, our horses took us back in the same canyon we had started from. So Dewey says, "Say, I think we had better make it back for home." It was blizzarding so hard we could not see part of the time. We had to go over a Prairie Dog Town, snow about 1 or 2 ft. deep. It was dangerous so we had to rely on our horses. Johnson & Hurlbert turned their horses and started on the run with their heads down. I tried to keep up with them but my horse stepped into a hole and fell. I tried to get out of the way. I lot all holts loose and thought I was clear as I could not see. But when the horse got up my foot was in the stirrup. It was my left foot. I rolled over on my hand so I could hold my head up. With the other, I could keep the snow off my face so I could breath[e]. As Dewey and O'Neal were behind, I called to them to catch my horse [as] I was throwed and hanging in the stirrup. No one showed up. I kept on yelling. Finally, O'Neal heard me. After I was drug some 3 or 4 hundred yards, he succeeded in getting up to me, but was unable to get his horse close enough to catch mine as he was on the side I was, and I was in danger of being tramped on by his horse. So he stopped his horse and took another run on the other side and succeeded in catching my horse, but when I tried to get up on my other foot, I would scare my horse and he would jump over against the other horse and jerk me down. So I had to stay there until Dewey rode up, got off and pulled my foot out to free me. I think this is one of my happiest times in my life and experience of 69 years. (s) Thomas M. Gilmore" [This story was handwritten in 1944]

    • Obituary: 2 Jan 1990, Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA; "Mrs. Cliff Innes Dies Mrs. Cliff Innes passed away at her home here Monday morning after giving birth to twin babies. One of the little sons gave up his life at the same time that his mother passed away. The other child is still living. The mother was much inclined toward heart trouble. She had had six children before, three of whom died and three are living. Funeral services were held this morning from the home, having been delayed in the hope that the deceased's brothers might get back from the west where they had been called on account of the death of their father."

    Notes:

    Birth:
The 1900 census gives Hattie's birth as "April 1886." The Colton book gives her birth as "25 April 1887." Cemetery marker also says 1887.

    Notes:

The large gap between Hattie and George indicates Alice Fern's likely birth here. Her mother's obituary states that she died "in infancy" and she is not listed in the 1895 state census, so probably died prior to that date.

    • Obituary: 1 Aug 1940, Smith Center, Smith County, Kansas, USA; George Bucklin Dies Suddenly Smith Center Man Passed Away Last Thursday Afternoon A wave of sorrow swept over this community Thursday evening when it was learned that death had claimed George Bucklin, a resident of Smith County for many years. The past few weeks he had been forced to take a rest from his work for the Pouns Oil Co. and had been advised to keep quiet but he had been down town visiting nearly all afternoon the day before his death and his sudden passing was thus a great shock to his many friends. Before coming to town to reside he had lived in several vicinities northeast and northwest of this city and many former neighbors in those communities faced the heat of Sunday afternoon to attend the funeral of one whom they had remembered as a kind friend. All of the service stations of the city closed in tribute to his memory during the final services as did the Steele & Morrison Pharmacy where the only child of the deceased is employed. The funeral was held form the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Roy E. Frey, conducting the services. Mrs. Claude Diehl presided at the organ console and the hymns were sung by Mrs. Irene McNerney, Pauline Ellis, C. W. Diehl and F. E. Lull. The pallbearers were: Charles Sims, O.M. Tomlinson, Carl Gregg, Ben Hawkins, John Christensen and Frank Luther. The flower bearers included Mrs. Ole Tomlinson, Mrs. Elmer Pouds, Mrs. Carl Gregg, Mrs. Ben Hawkins, Mrs. Chas. Sims, Mrs. Wardle Hawkins and Miss Myrta Seever. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery. Smith Center and Smith County was again called on last week to mourn the loss of one of her finest men when death called to the eternal rest George Edwin Bucklin of this city. Taken at a time when life held so much for him, his loss is keenly felt both in the business district of Smith Center and in its social and religious classes. Highly respected, admired and loved by all who knew him, diligent in any undertaking, George Bucklin is missed and will continue to be missed by his hundreds of friends who are only numbered by his acquaintances over this and surrounding counties and states. George was born in Rawlins Co., Kans., on Aug. 24, 1892, the son of Alice and Willard Bucklin, and departed from this earthly scene at his home in Smith Center on July 25, 1940, at the age of 48 years, 10 months and 27 days. Illness for many months had left him unable to daily keep up with his duties, although no one knew the seriousness of his condition until a few hours before death. When a child of eight he moved with his parents, brother and sisters to Smith County and later to Smith Center where he made his home and worked at his trade afterwards. On April 5, 1913, he was married to Elva Jean Gould at Bloomington, Nebr. One child, Lorraine, was born to this union. His wife preceded him in death about three years. The deceased is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Ralph Robb of Smith Center, his mother, Mrs. Alice Bucklin, with whom he made his home in Smith Center after the death of his wife, one sister, Mrs. Eugenia Wilson, also of Smith Center, and one brother, John Bucklin of Colorado Srings. Also by numerous relatives besides his host of friends. Besides his wife and father, three sisters preceded him in death. A good man is gone, but is not and will not be forgotten. CARD OF THANKS?We wish to extend our most sincere thanks to our friends and neighbors for their kind assistance and expressions of sympathy in the time of our sorrow. For these acts of thoughtfulness and consolation and also for the beautiful flowers we take this means of revealing our deepest appreciation and gratitude.?Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Robb.

In 2002, he resigned from the church and he and Jo moved to Woodville, to enjoy country living. They joined First Baptist Church, and a short while later, George was privileged to serve with the pastor, Dr. Dwayne Freese, a very dedicated pastor. He also enjoyed serving with the other staff members as well. While in Woodville, he preached in a number of other churches in the area. In 2009, he and Jo returned to Lumberton to be near the family. They joined the First Baptist Church in Silsbee. As a church member, he enjoyed working with the pastor, Dr. Scott Moody, a fine pastor and a good friend. George and Jo enjoyed traveling and visiting several European countries. A special visit was made to Dundee, Scotland, birthplace of his grandmother. She came here in 1900. A Scottish tradition has been enjoyed for three generations during the holiday season in the Stephens family, Scottish shortcake, home-baked by Jo, his wife. George had many friends in Southeast Texas. To anyone he may have offended in any way, he asks their forgiveness and God's forgiveness. His family will receive friends on Monday, April 15, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Farmer Funeral Home, 415 N. 4th Street, Silsbee, TX.
