    Notes:

An Elijah HAYDEN is found in the 32nd Infantry, Co F, enlisted from Hardin Co IA, age 32, enlisted Aug 1862, which would make his birth year around 1830. That would make him to young to be this Elijah - but too old to be his son! Probably related somehow. He apparently survived the war, so his military record might offer something of interest.

    • RESEARCH: The apparent 1887 marriage record of "Adeline Blackmer" to "Malcolm D. Burnham" is puzzling. A Union pension file for John W. Blackmer (Pvt., Co J, 74th Indiana Inf.), filed in Indiana Sept. 1885 was refiled by the widow, Adeline Blackmer inIndiana in June 1886, and by minor child Malcomb D. Burnham in Kansas in 1891. [File being pulled by Nicole (nikkisbc@yahoo.com)] Supporting this filing, is FindAGrave entry for "John W.Blackmier" in Lagrange Co IN, died 1886 (no specific dates). An entry on the Indiana Digital Archives site lists John W. Blackmer (Co. I, 74th Ind. Inf.), age 21, as enrolling for service on 9 August 1862 in Elkhart County, Indiana, which places him near Adeline Cunningham.

    • Residence: Apr 1861, Goshen, Elkhart County, Insiana, USA; Adeline's 1861 marriage record to Lafayette Stauffer indicates that although they were married in Cass County, Michigan, they were both "of" Goshen, Indiana.
    • Residence: Aug 1865, Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana, USA
    • Pension: 2 Jun 1866; Approved for a widow's pension, backdated approval to July 1864. $8 per month.

    • Pension: 24 Apr 1887; Approval of pension for the minor child of Adeline with second husband John W. Blackmer, son Burgess R. Blackmer.
    • Pension: 8 Dec 1894; Adeline's CW pension file indicates that on this date letters of guardianship were received for Joseph F. Mendenhall of Gove County, Kansas, guardian for Burgess R. Blackmer. This probably indicates that Malcolm Burnham, step-father, deserted him after Adeline's death, as he is found living with his son in Nodaway, Missouri, in the 1900 census.

    Notes:

Letter from Adeline mentions "Mary Ford's out in Iowa" Letter from Adeline mentions "your Uncle Will"; I believe this letter was written to Cora Emma ROUSH. Possibly it refers to a Will CUNNINGHAM, who might have been Cora's mother's brother? There was a Wilson CUNNINGHAM early in Howell Co. Could it have been him? 1870 census - found a W.H. BURNHAM in the 1910 Calloway Co MO census, with wife A.D., parents b KY., I was hopeful this was them, but checked the 1880 census for Calloway Co, and found the wife's name to be Angie, not Addie or Adeline. Eliminated as a possibility. From a look-up volunteer re Gove Co KS census ------------------------------ I have transcribed both the 1880 and 1900 Gove county census. I am sorry to report that the Burnham family does not show up on either census. In the other references I have there is one small reference to Burnham. I will quote the reference so that you can see it isn't much. "In the year 1884, father [father is William Blackwill] put up the first windmill, erected in Collyer for the purpose of grinding feed. It was a Holliday with a large twelve foot wooden wheel and built on the ground which Pete Meier now owns. It was used for a year to grind feed, although the Kansas winds were hard on it. Along with this mill, father ran an implement store, selling mowing machines, breaking plows and so forth. He sold more breaking plows than anything else. I remember one time when he got half a carload of mowing machines, and Burnham took the other half. ..."

From this I would guess that Burnham also sold farm implements. Since Collyer is in Trego County, just east of Gove County, maybe your family can be found there.

    I'm sorry there wasn't more.

    Notes:

    • Adam is confirmed to be the son of John and Emeline (Cunningham) Roush by his death certificate.
    • An Adam Roush married Maggie Yates in Howell County on 5 April 1890; Adam would have been age 24, and it seems likely that he was the Adam concerned. No other Adam Roush of marriageable age is known to have been in the county except for his Uncle Adam Roush who was still married to Livonia Chowning. However, his identity as the groom it is not otherwise confirmed.
    • Adam has not been located in the 1900 census
    • Adam appears in the 1910 Scott Co MO census with his wife "Martha C." born abt 1870 in Illinois. Also in the home were daughters Emma J. (abt 1894, IL); Fannie M. (abt 1896, IL); Dola (abt 1901, MO); and Minnie (abt 1904 MO)
    • Adam is found in the 1920 Scott County census with wife "Catherine" born abt 1870 in Illinois. In the home were his daughters: Emma born about 1896 in Missouri, whose mother was born in Illinois; and Dora born about 1897 in Missouri, and married to Harry [Voyles?], also of the home. Dora's husband's surname is not clear. Variant searches on the possible surname fail to turn up a marriage record or a 1930 census record for Dora and her husband.
    • Adam is found in the 1930 Scott County census with wife "Ellen" who was age 53, born in Texas. In the home was step-daughter "R. L. Bizzell"
    • Adam's 1951 death certificate names "Ella Roush" as his wife
    • There is a marriage record for Adam Roush to Ellen Bizzell, 10 December 1927, New Madrid County, Missouri
    • A RootsWeb WorldConnect file indicates that Adam Roush, born 1866 in Howell Co MO, married "Mattie Payner," who was born 1866 in White Co, IL, and that they had a duaghter, Fannie May Roush, who was born Nov 1896 in White Co IL. The family file on WorldConnect: "Dyer County and Alsup Families Galore," posted by Sam Alsup (chaplain.alsup@gmail.com), updated 18 January 2012.
    • A White County, Illinois, marriage is found between Adam "Raush and Mattie "Pryor," 17 August 1892 (Illinois Online Marriage Index)
    • The same WorldConnect file reflected a marriage between Fannie May Roush and Henry Bolden, resulting in the birth of Charles Henry Bolden in 1919 in Scott County, Missouri
    • A marriage between "Miss Fanny Roush" and H. M. Bolden is found in 1913, Scott County, MO

    • The same WorldConnect file stated that Mattie (Payner) Roush died in 1926 in Ripley County, Missouri
    • A 1926 Ripley County death certificate is found for Mattie Roush, stating that she was born 1866 in Illinois. The informant was Adam Roush

    Other Events:

    • Parents: Death certificate names parent as Willia Cunningham and Libby Ives. [Her bio parents.] Gertrude's Social Security Application and Claims record names her parents as David Logan and Ava Dake [her adoptive parents].
    • RESEARCH: Internet sources assign a husband with surname Warttman. This seemed plausible, although she did not appear with her family at age 13--could have been "working out" with a family? However, a March 1910 newspaper article in Waterloo, IA, indicates the death of Joseph Warttman, leaving a widow whose maiden name was Gertrude Logan and daughter Pearl Warttman. Additionally, a 14 February 1910 artile "Search for Sister Proves Fruitless," details the search of Louise Logan for her sister Gertrude Logan, age 17, believed to have been lured from Des Moines into "white slavery" and held by Chicago police. The article mentions that the parents of the Logan girls live in Waterloo. Gertrude Warttman appears as a widow with daughter Pearl in the 1920 Lake Co IL census, living in the home of the widowed Ava Logan, age 60, her likely mother. However, a Gertrude Warttman appears in the death index for Pierce Co WA, naming parents as William Cunningham and Libby Ives. So Gertrude Cunningham DID marry a Warttman. Marriage records for Black Hawk Co IA indicate the marriage of Joseph Warttman to Gertrude Logan on 26 December 1905. The bride was born about 1881, according to the record--the appropriate age for Gertrude Cunningham, but not for the Gertrude Warttman of the white slavery article. Have a Gertrude Logan and a Gertrude Cunningham been conflated? Was Gertrude Cunningham adopted by a Logan family? (She was the youngest child when her mother died, so this seems possible.)

(Special) Joseph Wartman of the firm of Logan & Wartman died suddenly last evening at 7:15 while sitting at the supper table, death being due to heart failure. Mr. Wartman was laughing and talking at the close of the meal when he was stricken and he died before the doctor who was summoned could arrive. The death is a shock to the many friends and business associates of Mr. Wartman, for he was a comparatively young man, only forty-two years of age, and had attended to his coal business as usual during the day. He had a slight attack of heart trouble a week ago but that was the first intimation of the disease. The first attack caused little anxiety and the second, which caused his death, comes therefore as a keen schock to the wife and other realtives. Deceased had lived in Cedar Falls for several years and had been associated with his father-in-law in business for four years. His wife's maiden name was Gertrude Logan. They have one little girl, four years old. Mr. Wartman was a member of the Maccabee lodge and of the German Lutheran church. He was a man admired and respected by all. Mr. Wartman has one brother, Sam Wartman, who is on a homestead in South Dakota west of the Missouri river. As it will be difficult to communicate with him the funeral will not be held until some time next week. Rev. E. B. Jones of the Baptist church will conduct the services."

    • NEWS: 3 Sep 1936, Zion, Lake County, Illinois, USA; "Lady Finds Long-Lost Sisters Mrs. Gertrude Wartman of Carmel Boulevard has just spent three months in a happy reunion with three sisters whom she had not seen or known the location of since childhood. The family was somewhat broken up because of the untimely death of the mother, and Mrs. Wartman had been adopted by the late Mrs. Logan, who died at her home in Zion some years ago. This childhood separation, added to the various removals of the members of the family, as time passed, so caused it that Mrs. Wartman had not seen one sister for forty-two years and another for forty-nine years, and had to call on a deceased brother's wife, whom she had never seen before, to get the location of the farm home of the sister in North Dakota. The Dakota farm furnished the scene of this strange but happy reunion of the five sisters, one from Los Angeles, one from San Francisco, one from Montana, one from Zion--a family that were like strangers getting acquainted again at the "halfway place". [sic] It took persistent effort on the part of Mrs. Wartman to search out her far-flung kin, but the desire was happily rewarded."
