Hayden History, written by Mary Hayden Houck Retyped from the original 1928 document by Vicky Lynn Bankey, Lakewood, Colorado, from a copy in her family. Her additions are noted in parentheses, followed by vlb. No supporting documentation for any facts noted in this report were included) Original note reads: (This was read at the Hayden Reunion held at Olympia Park, McKeesport, Pa., August 1, 1928. Mr. And Mrs. David L. Houck, Pitcairn, Pa, will be glad to give any information they have ) ***** Samuel and Priscilla Hayden seemed to follow in the footsteps of his parents, for they, also, had nine children. The eighth child was Nathaniel our ancestor, who was born February 21, 1725, and the ninth child was William, born October 5, 1727, ancestor of the Uniontown (Pa., vlb) Haydens. In 1745, Samuel and Priscilla moved to Basking Ridge, near Morristown, New Jersey, taking with them all of the famile except two, who married and remained in Braintree. So far we have found further records of but three of these children who came to New Jersey, - first, Christopher, of whom W.S. Hayden of Cleveland is a descendant: second, William, the youngest son, of whom there are many known descendants, among them being Chas. Hayden of Chicago, Mrs. Davis of Mass., and Mrs. McKinnon of New York City and all of the Uniontown Haydens; and third, our own Nathaniel. He married Zervia Sutton of Basking Ridge, N.J. We have found little of their life in New Jersey, but were told at the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C. that many of the old records of that state were destroyed when the Capital was burned in the War of 1812. The next record we find of them is in Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland County, Penna., with one son, Nathaniel. We have learned that some Haydens were early in Kentucky and Virginia, but have not found the name Nathaniel there, though we have as yet, by no means, exhausted all the records. There is a possibility that our Nathaniel may have been in those states before coming to Western Penna. We hope to continue our research work and may find some new data in the coming months. However, the next date of which we have a record was found in the Library at Harrisburg, the founding of Salem Church in 1792 [Rostraver Twp, Westmoreland County, Penna - vlb]. There are but three churches in the western part of the state that antedate it. It was constituted 19 years before the First Baptist Church of Pittsburg. One of its founders was Nathaniel Hayden. The first persons baptized were Joseph Budd and Wife, and Nathaniel Hayden and wife.

Then, too, we have searched back to the earliest records in Greensburg which was in 1773, when Westmoreland County was formed. There is recorded no will of Nathaniel Hayden, Sr., who died in 1812, and no transfer of property, so one would conclude he had nothing. On an old family Bible owned by Mrs. Starkamp of McKeesport, we found some data which stated that Nathaniel, Sr., had owned valuable land in New Jersey which he sold, receiving in payment Continental Money, which he next day discovered was worthless. This transaction financially ruined him. This is evidently family tradition, and no doubt true, but we are able to find public record of it. Nathaniel Hayden, Sr., died in 1812 and with his wife, Zervia, is buried in Salem Cemetery beside his son Nathaniel and his wife who was Abagail (probably Abigail - vlb) Osborn.

Nathaniel married Zerviah Sutton on 28 Aug 1752 in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey. Zerviah was born on 7 Jun 1736 in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey; died on 29 Apr 1814 in Pennsylvania, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

From Mary Hayden Houck's 1929 Genealogy:

Nathaniel, Jr., was born in New Jersey, November 29, 1755, and died in Rostraver Twp. September 15, 1845. His will, which is recorded in Greensburg, is very clear and concise. We have a copy of it, but it is too lengthy to be read here today. To Nathaniel and his wife, Abigail, were born 10 children, Permela, Zerah, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Abigail, Phoebe, Joseph, Thomas, Elsie, and Mary. I think we have here today descendents of just three of these: Jonathan, Thomas, and Zerah. According to the will, several of these had gone to Ohio before their father's death. ...... [In] 1793 on November 7, we find recorded in the Deed Book that Nathaniel Hayden [Jr.] bought 200 acres of land on the Monongahela River in Rrostraver Twp. for five shillings, lawful money of Pa. On June 3, 1796, he received a grant of land from the state containing 168 acres and allowance for 6% for roads. This tract joined his other land, and formed quite an estate. It was called "Hard Water" and described as being in the "Forks of the Yough River". He built the first shingle-roof house between the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers. This was used by him as a hotel and called "The Big House".

Nathaniel married Abigail Osburn on 14 Oct 1781 in New Jersey, USA. Abigail was born in in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey; died on 20 Apr 1830 in Pennsylvania, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

An Elijah HAYDEN is found in the 32nd Infantry, Co F, enlisted from Hardin Co IA, age 32, enlisted Aug 1862, which would make his birth year around 1830. That would make him to young to be this Elijah - but too old to be his son! Probably related somehow. He apparently survived the war, so his military record might offer something of interest.
