    Other Events:

    • Immigration: 17 Apr 1887;
      William was probably the William Donald who arrived in New York aboard the Circassia this date. The age, and country of origin are right, and his stated occupation, "moulder," is something that would have been likely in a shipbuilding town like Dundee.
    • Immigration: 1888, Rawlins County, Kansas, USA;
      William filed "first papers" for naturalization while in Rawlins County.
    • Anecdote: Abt 1897-1900, Decaturville, Camden County, Missouri, USA;
      William fell in love with a young woman when his family lived near Decaturville. Her family objected to an affiliation with a "foreigner" and there was general prejudice against the Scottish family with their thick brogue. As a result, the family moved a few miles away, and settled in Hooker township, Laclede County, where they bought a farm and remained.
    • Obituary: 15 Jun 1906, Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri, USA; Laclede County Sentinel:
      On Wednesday morning while William Donald was out feeding his stock he was overtaken by the sudden and severe thunder and rain storm. He sought shelter under a tree in the barn yard where he was stricken by lightning and killed. Mr. Donald was an unmarried man and lived with his mother, sisters and brother on a farm five miles north of Lebanon. He was a native of Scotland and had many friends in the vicinity of his home.

    Notes:

    Died:
    William was struck by lightning in a field on the family farm and was killed instantly. He was thirty-eight years old.

    • Residence: Aug 1926, Kansas City, Jackson County, MIssouri, USA; His mother's obituary states that he survives her and lives in Kansas City.
    • Anecdote: Between 1920-1927; When David came to the United States with his brother James, Donnie Raef tells us that James also brought home a bride. According to the story, David ran away with James's wife. Donnie's memory is that she was called either "Addie" or "Allie," and was from Scotland. Lebanon newspapers do not mention a wife for James Donald. Scotland does not record a marriage for James Donald in the July-October 1920 period. Possibly they weren't married? Possibly David sweet-talked her during their ship's passage? David went to live in Kansas City, rather than settling in Lebanon and was there in 1921, 1922, and 1926. His California death certificate indicated he had been in the state for 5 months.

    When David died, his sisters in Lebanon, Missouri, began to make plans to bring his body back to their family burial plot at the city cemetery. Brother James, however, whose wife David stole, is remembered as saying, "Hell, no! We'll leave him where he is."
