Mr. William Burch, riding a mule, entered the race and staked claim to the farm two and one-half miles south of Glencoe. He first build a sod house, then a temporary frame one, and finally in about 1897, a more permanent one-story frame structure. In the early 1900's Mr. Burch sold the farm to Allen Bowen, who added a two-story addition. Then in 1912 Mr. Bowen traded the farm and house to A. W. Stokes for $500 and A. W.'s farm in Mt. 19th anniversary celebration, Daily Mirror (Glencoe, Oklahoma)

"The Family celebrated the event With a Reunion
Forty-nine years ago, Rev. Thos. Boderjack, at his home five miles from Mountain View, Howell county, Missouri, spoke the necessary words that united in marriage A. W. Stokes and Miss Eudosia Walker. Last Thursday, July 30, 1925, the event was commemorated by a gathering of all the living members of the family, their wives and children at the home of the aged couple in Glencoe.
It was the first time for more than twenty-five years that all the sons had sat at the family table at the same time. It was the intention to celebrate the fiftieth aniversary but some one made a mistake and after all the plans were laid, the mistake was discovered but it was decided to go ahead and celebrate.
    A. W. Stokes was born in Indiana November 1, 1854 and lived there and in Clay county, Missouri, untill 1875, when he moved to Howell county, Missouri, where he married, raised his family and continued to reside until 1912, when he traded farm with Allen Bowen and moved to the neighborhood of Glencoe. In 1918 he moved to town, where he has since resided.
Mr. Stokes is a living example of applied thrift. He was born with no silver spoon in his mouth, has been a farmer all his life and has always resided in a "poor man's country," yet he has accumulated enough that he and his wife can live in comfort the rest of their days without work, if they so desired but they are not satisfied to remain idle.
Mrs. Stokes is a native of Hickman county, Tennessee, having been born on December 15, 1854, and is the mother of 11 children, six of whom are living. She is a member of the Methodist church, while Mr. Stokes belongs to nothing except the horse club.
All the living children, their wives and the grandchildren were present at the reunion and are as follows:
Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Stokes, of Stillwater.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stokes, and four children, of Glencoe
Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Stokes and four children, of Apache, Oklahoma.
Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Stokes and four children, of Glencoe.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stokes and three children, of near Stillwater.
Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Stokes and five children, of near Glencoe.
The many friends of this estimable old couple will join the Mirror in wishing them many more happy anniversaries."

[Living next door to Esther's mother, Bedie (Clark) Thornton. "Ann T." listed in census was doubtless a misinterpretation. Son Thomas Newell was the right age for this position in the family, all of the other children are correctly named. It is possible that the initials "T. N." were reversed to "N. T." which sounds very like "Ann T."]

[William's middle initial in this enumeration was interpreted by Ancestry.com as a "W." However, a study of the enumerator's handwriting makes it more likely that it was intended as a "U." Since William's middle name was "Euen," this is an understandable error on the part of the recorder.

    Land Entry:
From his own statements in November 1888, William E. Walker's home was "comfortable to live in the year around." It was a "box house," with rooms 14 x 16 and 10 x 12, and had a stone chimney worth $65. It was furnished with two bedsteads, a cupboard, a sewing machine, a clock, table and chairs, and a cookstove. The farm, which had about about 167 fruit trees, and 25 cultivated acres where every season since 1879 he had raised corn, wheat, oats, and vegetables. Trees on the place were black jack, black hickory, post oak, and brush. The family kept 2 mules, 1 cow, 21 hogs, 4 sheep, and chickens. Part of the place, he stated, was "too rough and stony" to be cultivated.

    • Anecdote:
Tom's grandson, William D. Walker tells about his (Tom's) sneezes, which were always in threes:
"It was "sneeze...ASH HOE...sneeze...ASH HOPPER...sneeze...ASH BANK...This was usually followed by a "nose blow" one nostril at a time, using only his finger. Then a final blow or two of both nostrils to make sure the passages were open. These are good things to know. I'd like to see you demonstrate the process except that he often ended the process by wiping his fingers on the cuff of his overalls!"
    • Anecdote: Tom usually slept with one or two of the boys. In the morning Tom would pull on his overalls just far enough to get a plug of chewing tobacco out of his pocket. Before the need to spit he would go outside--his spitting wasn't allowed in the house. He grew his own tobacco in a little tobacco patch.

Crowder place burned January 1919, when Donald was a baby. Tom was away. Afterward, Earl and Grace and baby lived in a shed on the place for a while. "Mama carried Don out & Dad carried out the organ [on his back]." Also: "The old Crowder house, located across the fields from the present-day Bill Walker farm (which was once a part of the original Crowder homestead), caught fire one winter. Grace and Earl and baby Donald were living there with Earl's father, Thomas N. Walker. It was a very cold winter; the ponds had frozen over, and they couldn't get water from the cistern to fight the blaze. Grace Walker described it: "And all we did was walk out of there with the clothes on our back and little Donald, except that Daddy went in and brought out the organ on his back." Tom Walker was, at the time, somewhere out of state; there is some dispute about where, but Donald Walker (the baby at the time) says that Tom Walker was in California."

Uncle Tom Walker as he was known throughout the country, was converted and joined the Methodist Church in early life, in which faith he remained throughout his life until God called him to his eternal home September 5, 1942, at the age of 84 years, seven months and seven days. He will be greatly missed by his children and other relatives and many friends as he had spent most of his life in this community and was known the country over."

      Email from Angela McGhie:
Janis, I was able to go to the BLM office in Virginia last week and read the tract books for Howell County, Missouri. I had just made a note for my tract book lecture to remind people to not only read the name column, but also the pencil notations in all the columns -- then one of those tiny little pencil notations read "NW4 SE 3,033 Thomas N. Walker Jan. 10 & 14, 1881 offd." I believe it is referencing land offered that Thomas N. Walker filed a claim for, but it never went to patent. I was not in a regular row in the volume, so does not give a date of cancellation or relinquishment, but I hope to be able to follow the 3,033 number to an application or other documentation in the land entry papers at NARA. I will let you know when I am able to get there or get someone to search for the file. This pencil notation was on page 114 in volume 6 of the "Missouri Ironton N & W" Tract Book. It was written along the entry for Section 12, Township 26 North, Range 8 West. The only two other Walker entries in T 26 & 27 N, R 8 & 9 W were the one for William E. Walker in Sec. 20, T 27 N, R 8 W for 80 acres, and one for William J. Walker, a homestead in Sec. 21, T 27 N, R 8 W for 160 acres. I will get back to you as soon as I find more... Angela

    See attached sources.

    Tom's brother William

He must have been a hard worker. In the twenty years between their move from Tennessee to his death in 1893, he did quite a lot.

He homesteaded his own place in Hutton Valley. Due to illness, he was absent for all of one spring planting, early in his homesteading process. As soon as he got better he went away and worked hauling dirt for the railroad for two months, presumably to make up for the lack of income that year. By 1888 he had a "box house" which was "comfortable to live in" year-round, and had a stone fireplace and chimney. It was furnished with two bedsteads, a cupboard, a sewing machine, a clock, table and chairs, and a cookstove. He had planted 167 fruit trees and cultivated 25 acres in corn, wheat, oats, and vegetables. They had 2 mules, 1 cow, 21 hogs, 4 sheep, and some chickens. Part of the place was "too rough and stony to be cultivated."

He was just 37 when he died. We don't know his cause of death, but we do know that he had the earlier illness that didn't allow him to plant. When the Civil War started he was age 5 and when it ended he was 9, and he was the oldest boy in the family, with his father away from home. Privations of the war years may have left him with poor health.

William was just two years older than your granddad Tom. They suffered the Civil War together as boys, made the move to Missouri together as adolescents, and married about the same time as young men. Their first children were born just six months apart, Della in December 1878 and Henderson in June 1879.

Tom's next closest brother was Bob, 13 years younger. (Five girls between Tom and Bob.)

"Obituary The death of Mrs. A.J. Smith marks the passing of a good woman. Mary C. Walker was born in Hickman county, Tennessee, on the 29th day of Jan. 1860. In 1876 she was blessedly converted, and united with the M. E. Church, South, of which she was a faithful member and worked as long as she was able to work. On the 17th day of January, 1878, she was married to her now bereaved husband, A. J. Smith. To this union were born twelve children, two of whom, in infantile innocency, went to be with Jesus. Ten, four sons, and six daughters, yet remain, Sam, Webb, and Ben and Mrs. Eunice Allen of Mountain View; Mrs. Alice Brooks, Mrs. Mary Hoop, Mrs. Bertha Province, Miss Fay, Miss Flossie and Walter Smith of Liberal, still linger on this side of the River Sister Smith was a woman of irreproachable character, devotedly attached to her husband, an affectionate mother, a saintly Christian, and zealously working for the Master?s kingdom and a friend to everybody. This world was left poorer when on the 26th day of February, 1920, at 2L15 p.m. she quietly took her departure for the ?far away home of the soul? A heart-broken husband, ten children and fourteen or more grand-children, with a multitude of sorrowing friends mourn her going. But we sorrow not as those who have no hope. We believe that she lived and died in the Lord, and that she lives again in a better world. Eight of the children and a sister, Mrs. A. W. Stokes from Payne county, Oklahoma, were present at the funeral services. Good-bye Dear Wife, good-bye Dear Mother, goodbye dear Sister, goodbye dear Grandmother and good-bye kindest of friends, till we meet again. Funeral services were conducted at the home, Friday at 2 o?clock, Rev. M. Bell officiating. Interment at the I. O. O. F. cemetery. A Friend"

    • Census: 13 Jun 1870, Pine Wood (post office), 6th Civil District, Hickman County, Tennessee, USA
    • Census: 24 Jun 1880, Goldsberry township, Howell County, Missouri, USA

    Notes:

Only a few pieces of paper and a cemetery stone document the short life of Sarah A. Walker--her father's Bible entry of her birth, two census enumerations, a marriage record, and her burial record. She was born in 1862, after the beginning of the Civil War and after her father had been incarcerated at Camp Douglas as one of the Confederates surrendered to the Union at Fort Donelson the previous February. Her father, though released in a prisoner exchanged, served the Confederacy until the end of the War, returning home in 1865, when Sarah was three years old. The next few years were years of struggle in war-torn Middle Tennessee. Enumerated at age 8 in 1870, Sarah was the only oldest of her siblings not to work in the cotton factory; with sisters ages 4, 2, and 5 months, she was undoubtedly kept busy at home by her mother and her grandmother, who lived with them. In 1872, when Sarah was 10, her father moved his family to Howell County, Missouri, where he could homestead and make a fresh start and a better life for his numerous children. Sarah married nine years later, Daniel Webster Smith her chosen husband was the brother of her older sister Mary's husband, Andrew Jackson Smith. Sarah lived a little less than two years after her marriage, very likely dying in childbirth, soon after her 19th birthday.

    Birth:
The family lived in Dickson County in 1860, but Sarah was born in 1862, after her father had been surrendered at the Battle of Fort Donelson and sent to Camp Douglas in Chicago. The family may have moved over into Hickman County to be closer to Esther Elizabeth Thornton's family in her husband's absence. The family was enumerated in 1870 in Hickman County.

In any case, Sarah was probably born in either Dickson or Humphreys County.

    Died:
Sally lived only a year or two after her marriage. 1880 census shows them childless; I would speculate that she might have died in childbirth?

    Buried:
The Jess Roberts place is listed in the Howell Co cemetery book as "Unknown Cemetery." Directions in cemetery book: Located in a pasture with fence all around the plot. Goldsberry Twp Sec 7, twp. 27, r. 7.

FINDLEY--Mrs. Beatty Etta Findley, widow of George L. Findley, passed away at the home of her son, E. E. Findley, early Tuesday afternoon. She had resided here for the last five years, coming from Las Vegas, N. M. She is survived by four sons, Ray and Elva [sic] of Albuquerque, Lee of Las Vegas and Rutherford of Spokane, Wash., and by two daughters, Mrs. C. H. Morrow and Mrs. C. W. Chandler of Albuquqerque. Funeral services will be conducted from the First Baptist Church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev. A. Hope Owen will officiate, assisted by the Rev. L. M. Walker. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Named for her maternal grandmother, Obedience "Bedie" (Clark) Thornton, her name is seen variously as Beeda, Bedy, Bedie, but never as Obedience.

    Name:
Bedie's death certificate and her obituary both name her as "Beatty" Etta. These are the only instances that I have seen of this spelling. Also seen as "Beda" and "Bedy."

Though named for her maternal grandmother, I have never seen her referenced with the full name "Obedience," and she was probably just named the shorter "Bedie."

    Birth:
Minnie's birth month is consistently stated as October, however, some believe that she was born in October 1881. Since the 1900 census, her obituary, and her cemetery marker all agree on the October 1880 date, and only the 1910 census seems to indicate otherwise, I believe it is likely that she was born in October 1880, not 1881.
