    • Civil War: See his Civil War diary in my Dropbox. Sent to me by Phil Shappard (pshappard@gmail.com). Phil's email 5 Nov 2018: "Dear Janis, It has been sometime since we last chatted about the 29th Illinois Infantry Volunteers. I thought of you last week while in Springfield on business when I squeezed out a couple of hours of research at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. What does one do with just two hours? After reading through their resources on the 29th, I was reminded that Joel DeBoard's diary was in its collection. I requested it and within ten minutes I was able to hold the diary and carefully look through it. After trying to read through a few pages, I was immediately thankful for the time and effort you put into the transcription. It has been very valuable to me as I seek to understand additional detail on the lives of these young men from Southern Illinois. As you are no doubt aware, Joel DeBoard's relation, William S. Bolerjack was also in Company G of the 29th. The diary was last in the possession of Donald "Mousy" Smith in neighboring Enfield, IL. The only listed facsimile of the diary was microfilm photos produced in the early 1980s at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a single copy at the Norris City, IL library. I contacted the SIU library a number of months ago, only to find out they have lost their sole copy leaving Norris City as the only known copy. Upon contacting them to line up a visit (six hour drive), I was told their microfilm reader was not working properly and that copies would have to be transcribed. I talked further with one of the librarians who was sympathetic to my appeal for assistance. Bottom line, she was allowed to take the remaining microfilm to the next county and use their library's reader and make digital copies of all 178 pages. The result is a couple of large pdf files that encompass Sgt. Bolerjack's three years of service giving even greater detail to the day to day movement's of the 29th Illinois. Now, you may have already seen this in the past, but just in case you haven't seen the full diary, you can download the three pdf files from my Drop Box account at: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/38cte24eq92yujs/AAC8gHSGw6s-Cyqb4_zYo_wIa?dl=0 It helps to print it out and read from paper. Even then, it took me at least a week to work through it. Hopefully, you will enjoy reading through this diary account of yet another soldier of the 29th and a relative of Joel DeBoard. Have a great day! Phil Shappard"

    Notes:

    Died:
John and Lucy Bolerjack cannot be located in the 1880 census. Their son, Calvin, is found in the home of Whitfield Hill, at the age of 14 (presumably a relative of his mother, Lucy J. Hill). Som William E. (15) and daughter Sarah E. (24) are found in the home of William A. HILL, where they are listed as his niece and nephew. Son Joel Bolerjack (21) is found in the home of his uncle Henry Bolerjack, in Howell County, Missouri. Daughter Winnie and son Samuel cannot be located.
The fact that the children are spread about among relatives leads me to conclude that John and Lucy did at some point prior to 1880.

Sinking of the SS General Lyon, after leaving Wilmington. ------------------------------------------------------ From http://home.midwest.net/~cbconly/enf2.htm White County sent, in proportion to its population, more soldiers than any other county in the United States. I thought that I might give the names of all the men on the Civil War "Honor Roll" but the list is too long for this book. Captain James Fields, who fought in the Mexican War, was wounded, his brother, Joshua M. Fields was killed at Missionary Ridge and Robert Fields lost his life at Vicksburg. For the people of White County one of the most tragic events of the War was the sinking of the General Lyon. The War was over and the boys who had lived through four years of conflict were coming home. They had survived the long march through Georgia on starvation rations of a cup of meal a day, ground cob and all, and what little they could forage from the country side. Now, after boarding the General Lyon at Wilmington, North Carolina, they were homeward bound. Laughter and singing resounded from the decks and the favorite melody was "Home, Sweet Home." But a storm overtook the ship, a cask of kerosene on the top deck was broken open, and when the oil reached the furnace, the whole ship burst into flames. Of the 404 men on board only three escaped. One of these was Michael Brockett, father of Willard Brockett, Sr. John W. Fields, Jesse H. Veatch, Cyrus L. Gowdy and four of the sons of Theron Gowdy, William, Milton, John and Henry, were lost on the ill-fated steamer.

Draper, Gentry, Duckworth, Hood, Harrell, Land, Hargett, Newman and many other names familiar in Enfield were on that Civil War Honor Roll. -------------------------------------------

The conflict with Priestly dying in the sinking of the General Lyon is that his wife, Martha JOYNER/JOINER remarried the previous year, in 1864. Either a) it is erroneous that Priestly's widow Martha JOINER was the same Martha Bolerjack that subsequently married widower William T. FORRESTER or b) Priestly died earlier in the war, perhaps nearer to the time of his discharge in 1862 due to injuries.

Priestly married Martha J. Joyner on 15 Jun 1853 in White County, Illinois, USA. Martha (daughter of Thomas Joyner and Lucy Walters) was born about 1834 in Illinois, USA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Moved to MO from IL between 1874 (b of youngest child in IL) and 1880 (present in Howell Co MO census).

From the Mtn View X-RAY, reprinted in the West Plains Journal Feb 22, 1906: "Uncle Henry Bolerjack met with a little accident early this week which proved quite painful. A contusion, or bruise, was produced on his foot by contact with a knot." From Howell Co Post Office Book One, pg 140: "Three brothers - Thomas C., Henry, and Marion Bolerjack - all soldiers in the Federal Army, came from Illinois in 1873 and homesteaded in the vicinity [of Center Hill]."

This supports the view that these three are all sons of Joel H. Bolerjack, found in the 1850 White Co IL census.

    Obituary:
    Obituary, Joel Franklin DeBoard
    From the Mountain View Standard

    August 15, 1919

REV. J. FRANKLIN DEBOARD - Uncle J. Franklin Deboard was born in White county, Illinois, July 13, 1836, and died June 15, 1919. He toiled along in this old troublesome world for 83 years, 11 months, and 2 days. He was wonderfully saved at the age of 16, and united with the M.E. church. He united in marriage August 26, 1858, to Margaret A. McKinsey, who was a faithful wife and helpmate, being converted to Jesus Christ in her 15th year. She still waits and mourns his departure. To this union were born thirteen children, seven girls and six boys. Five boys and two girls still are waiting their departure when they shall join their father and loved ones who have crossed on over the tide. Two girls, Mrs. J.H. Goodman and Mrs. W.L. Beard, and S.S. Deboard, live north of Chandler, Okla., and two boys, A.L. and R.H. Deboard, and two other sons, A.E. and L.L. Deboard, still live near Mountain View. Rev. Deboard was licensed to preach in the M.E. Church in 1860. He volunteered in the union army in August, 1861, and made a good soldier for three years, being honorably discharged in August, 1864. He left Illinois and came to Howell county in 1876, where he lived until his death. Shortly after arriving in Missouri he united with the Congregational church and was ordained to preach. 'Uncle Franklin' as he was called, was not a great preacher as some call great, but was one in whom everyone had confidence. He was always on hand at preaching services, prayer meetings, and Sunday school to do what he could for the Lord and the church. He was not only a preacher, but was one of the best Sunday school class leaders in the church. He was present to marry young people and also to bury the dead. 'Uncle Franklin' was well known and loved by both young and old. Especially was he loved by the host of grand-children, there being thirty-seven grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Truly it was a shock, and we are grieved to lose him as husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and church worker. But our loss is his gain, so we say 'Amen' to the Father of Lights who doeth all things well. His grandson, Rev. Franklin N. Deboard.

Joel married Margaret Ann "Ann" McKenzie on 21 Aug 1858 in White County, Illinois, USA. Margaret (daughter of Alexander H. McKenzie and Margaret "Peggy" Vineyard) was born on 24 Jan 1841 in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois; died on 6 Jul 1933 in Benton Township, Howell County, Missouri; was buried in Mountain View-Center Hill Cemetery, Howell County, Missouri.
