  In the 1850 census, James A. Walker appears in the household. Archalus Walker is the head, but all children are listed after Jacob, implying that they were his children. James A. Walker was born about 1832 in Illinois.
  
  Archalus C. Walker is another son of Jacob Walker, and he is found in the 1850 Macoupin Co census, living in the home of a James Walker, born about 1818 in Tennessee. James Walker is married to Mary, and they have children Agnes and Jacob, strong evidence that James was the son of Jacob. Additionally, internet sources name him as the son of Jacob and Agnes.
  
  Either Jacob named two sons James, or possibly one of them was the son of another brother, who lived with Jacob's family? Other postulated brothers included a James and a Joseph.

    1815 will of David McAdow, Dickson County, mentions his daughter "Jean McClean." Jean may have married a brother of Agnes McLean? Or be the mother of Agnes? Image no. 798-799, Tennessee, Probate Court Books, 1795-1927, DicksonWills, 1800-1899, FamilySearch.

    The only direct evidence of Jacob's birthplace is his 1850 census enumeration in Madison County, Illinois, stating his age as 57, and his brithplace as South Carolina.
    
    Indirect evidence, however, would suggest a birthplace of Georgia:

    • His probable sister, Mary "Polly" (Wallker) Brazzell was born in Georgia about 1790.
      
    • His probable younger siblings, George H., Elijah, and Retha, were born in Georgia in 1801 and 1802, respectively.
      
    • The of obituary his likely brother Archalaus Walker, ten years older, stated that he (Archalaus) was born in Virginia, raised in Georgia and lived in Tennessee for many years. Archalaus was born about 1783; if he was "raised" in Georgia, the family was probably in Georgia when he was age 10, 1793, the year of Jacob's birth.
      
    • Jacob's sons John M., Archalaus C., and Joseph Walker were enumerated in 1880 in various places (see citations under individuals), and all enumerations agreed that their father was born in Georgia.
      
    • In conflict with this is the census enumeration of younger daughter Mary M. (Walker) Best in 1900 and 1910; her enumerations indicate that her father was born in Tennessee. However, this is the only suggestion of his birth in Tennessee, and no other evidence indicates the family's arrival in Tennessee prior to at least 1806.

Daughter Ida May (Walker) Senteney's 1946 Coles County death certificate states that her parents were "John Walker" and "Harriet Finch."

Evidence that "John M. Walker" found in 1850 Macoupin Co census married to "Danah" (sometimes incorectly transcribed as "Darrah") is the same man as "John Mc Walker" found in 1860 Macoupin Co census married to Harriet.

It seems to have been a very popular name. :-) Who do you show for Philip's father and mother? What area of Illinois did he live? I saw the Blackhawk war records in the Illinois archives and assumed that it was my gg grandfather, but maybe it was yours. My father used to recall family stories of shooting indians out of the trees in during the "indian" wars that's why I associated it my gg grandfather. Did your Philip own land in St. Clair county in the early 1800's? (I noticed that in the Illionis archives also.) What I have from the family records is that Philip Teter b. June 13 1788 d. July 31 1844 married Rebekah Robinson b. Sept. 5 1793 d. Dec. 14 1844 and they had five children. They were: George Washington Cartwright Teter born April 1828 in Troy Illinois (present day Madison Co. although I believe this was St. Clair Co. at the time). Others were Samuel, John, Nancy and Harriet. It's not recorded who besides George survived childhood. The marriage records came from Illinois marriage records (married Feb. 14 1815 ((Illinois records)) or Feb. 16 1815 ((family bible records)) plus the Bible of Rebecca Mills. I don't have birth dates on the others, as George W.C. is my direct link back. George Washington Cartwright Teter was married prior to 1848 to Elizabeth Walker in Illinois. She was born approximately in 1828 in Tenn.?? I don't have burial information. They had ten children: Nancy Ellen, b. about 1848, Agnes, Stephen, Julia Harriet, Jacob b. Dec. 1844, my grandfather Philip b. Oct. 27 1856, d. Feb. 9 1943, Rebecca, Jane 1851-1854, John 1854-1856 and Peter 1856-1858. The information on Jane, John and Peter found in 1860 census and other information from the Bible of Rebecca Mills. Family history (from my father) said that George left Illinois for Missouri to work on the railroad and to escape the Civil War draft. However, George W. C. was dead before my father was born so that's certainly second hand information but should be reliable. I don't have much information on George's life in Missouri except the notation that he died April 22, 1898 and is buried in Stoutland, Laclede Co., Missouri. (This is in S.W. Missouri). Philip Teter (the son of George W. C. Teter) married Mary Sultina Adams Sept. 28 1884 in Gillespie, Macoupin County, Illinois. They had six children, with only three surviving through adult hood. All lived in the Macoupin County Illinois area with the exception of William Earl who lived in S.E. Missouri and had two daughters. My father Kenneth Larman, was the youngest born in Feb. 13, 1903 , d. Sept. 25, 1992. Philip and Mary Sultina and all the children with the exception of my father are buried in the Morrison cemetary in Macoupin County Illinois. Illinois Supreme Court case (1898) regarding Jehu Walker, born abourt 1813. Case reporter offers information that he had a brother in Macoupin County named Samuel, a deceased brother named Joseph (husband of the living Barbara Walker of Macoupin County), and a sister named Mary Best, residing in Texas.

Since Mary (Walker) Best is found in the home of Archalaus Walker in 1850 Madison Co IL, and is listed in sequence with children of Jacob and Agnes Walker, it has been assumed that Mary was the daughter of Jacob and Agnes. Additionally, Mary is found in Texas in 1900, and the court case mentions that Mary Best was residing in Texas, but was back in Illinois for a while at the period of the events being discussed (about 1892-1893).

This is indirect evidence that Samuel Walker was the son of Jacob and Agnes Walker.

This Samuel A. is close to the age of the Samuel A. who was a son of Phillip V. Walker. The two should not be confused. Phillip's Samuel moved to Gentry County, Missouri, with the rest of his family, and is found there in census from 1860 onward.

Nothing further is known of Mary (Walker) Spence, her husband, or her three known children. A search of the Macoupin County probate index on FamilySearch.org, Probate Index A, 1835-1880 does not reveal a record for the death of John Spence. John and Mary (Walker) Spence have not been located in the 1880 census, either in or out of Illinois. No Illinois marriage has been located for a "Mrs. Mary Spence," nor for a Mary Spence that seems likely by place or time (Illinois Online Record Index only). Searches in the 1880 census for John F. Walker born about 1859 and Charles W. Walker born abt 1862 have also been unsuccessful. A search of the Illinois death index on FamilySearch.org has failed to locate the death of anyone by the name of Spence with parents John and Mary.

Henry "Allhousen," residing with John Spence and Mary (Walker) Spence in the 1860 Macoupin County census, was the son of Susan M. Walker and her first husband Charles N. Ohlhousen. Susan was a known daughter of Samuel A. Walker, who granted permission for her marriage to Ohlhousen as she was underage.

This is a link between Mary Walker, known daughter of John McLean Walker and Susan Walker, known daughter of Samuel A. Walker. Another child of Susan Walker and Charles Ohlhousen, Missouri "Allhousing," married Anthony Green Walker, a known son of Phillip V. Walker and Frances Best.

This links John McLean Walker (believed to be the son of Jacob Walker and Agnes McLean), with Susan Walker (known daughter of Samuel A. Walker), and with the Phillip V. Walker family--Phillip V. descendants sort into our Group 2 DNA group, and is probably the son of Samuel A. or Jacob Walker.

Brewster Farrar, who appears as her apparent son in the 1885 Kansas census, born about 1881 in Illinois, died in Sangamon Co IL in 1917 and his death certificate names his mother as Josephine Capp, which caused me concern that there was confusion about the identity of the subject individual.

It is equally possible that Louise did not know where William was and chose to characterize herself first as married and later as divorced.

  Orange Walker Gillespie, May 22 - Orange Walker, 77, a lifelong resident of the Dorchester community, west of this city, died last night at St. Francis hospital in Litchfield, where he had been a patient since April 1. Decedent was born near Dorchester, the son of Joseph and Barbara Walker, and had lived for many years on his farm, five miles west of this city. Surviving are one son, Orange jr., of Wood River; three daughters, Mrs. Lucy Luken of Gillespie, Mrs. Joseph Boree of northwest of this city and Miss Frances, at home; three sisters, Mrs. Ryatha Ann Spencer of northwest of this city, Mrs. Almira Howell of Gillespie and Mrs. Frances Clark of Alton; one brother, Joseph Walker, west of this city. The body was taken to the Jacoby funeral home in Bunker Hill, where services will be held at 2 pm. Sunday.

The latter posting also names several of Julia's siblings, including an Agnes and a Jacob. The latter tends to support a likelihood that Julia Teeter's mother was a child of Jacob and Agnes (McLean) Walker. Supporting this likelihood, Julia's 1880 and 1910 census states her mother's birth in Tennessee. Julia has not been located in census prior to her marriage.

  "Karl, Thanks for the post. What I have found in my limited research is a lot of Philip and George Teter(s)!! It seems to have been a very popular name. :-) Who do you show for Philip's father and mother? What area of Illinois did he live? I saw the Blackhawk war records in the Illinois archives and assumed that it was my gg grandfather, but maybe it was yours. My father used to recall family stories of shooting indians out of the trees in during the "indian" wars that's why I associated it my gg grandfather. Did your Philip own land in St. Clair county in the early 1800's? (I noticed that in the Illionis archives also.) What I have from the family records is that Philip Teter b. June 13 1788 d. July 31 1844 married Rebekah Robinson b. Sept. 5 1793 d. Dec. 14 1844 and they had five children. She was born approximately in 1828 in Tenn.?? I don't have burial information. They had ten children: Nancy Ellen, b. about 1848, Agnes, Stephen, Julia Harriet, Jacob b. Dec. 1844, my grandfather Philip b. Oct. 27 1856, d. Feb. 9 1943, Rebecca, Jane 1851-1854, John 1854-1856 and Peter 1856-1858. The information on Jane, John and Peter found in 1860 census and other information from the Bible of Rebecca Mills. Family history (from my father) said that George left Illinois for Missouri to work on the railroad and to escape the Civil War draft. However, George W. C. was dead before my father was born so that's certainly second hand information but should be reliable. I don't have much information on George's life in Missouri except the notation that he died April 22, 1898 and is buried in Stoutland, Laclede Co., Missouri. (This is in S.W. Missouri). Philip Teter (the son of George W. C. Teter) married Mary Sultina Adams Sept. 28 1884 in Gillespie, Macoupin County, Illinois. They had six children, with only three surviving through adult hood. All lived in the Macoupin County Illinois area with the exception of William Earl who lived in S.E. Missouri and had two daughters. My father Kenneth Larman, was the youngest born in Feb. 13, 1903 , d. Sept. 25, 1992. Philip and Mary Sultina and all the children with the exception of my father are buried in the Morrison cemetary in Macoupin County Illinois. It was difficult to follow John's progress due to his inconsistent name in census. He appears as Jonathan (1860), Johnathan G. (1900), John (1910), John G. (1920), John (1930), and as "John M. Walker" in his death record.

He is not found in his family home in 1880, when he would have been about 20, and has not been located elsewhere, raising the question of possible death.

His death record offers a birth of May 1858, inconsistent with the birth of Jacob in September 1857, and inconsistent with the birth year of "Jonathan" just 3 months old in the 1860 census.

These inconsistencies, however, can be resolved by the common threads of 1) his employment as a painter in census of 1900, 1920, 1930, and in his death record; and 2) consistency in his wife and children's names.

The death record was likely wrong about both his middle initial, which does not appear as an "M" in any other record, and about his birth date, which was probably 1859 or 1860, not 1858.

Birth:

Although John's death record indicates a birth date of 29 May 1858, that would have made his birth a scant 8 months after the birth of his brother Jacob--possible but unlikely. The 1900 census offers "May 1860" for his birth, and it is likely that the date was actually 29 May 1859 or 1860.

As mentioned elsewhere, John is sometimes seen as Jonathan. In two census records he is given the middle initial "G" while his death record offers a middle initial of "M."

• The Macoupin County probate index has an entry for the estate of James C. Walker, administratrix Eliza A. Walker. While no specific date is attached to the record, the page is headed "1888" indicating that the estate was processed after 1888, in the natural sequence of "W" estates and probates


• Wayne Cemetery is where Stephen/Steven A. Sutton, the first husband of Samuel and Eliza's daughter Sarah, was buried.


• In the 1900 Macoupin Co census enumeration Eliza is recorded as having borne 6 children, 5 of whom were living. Sarah, Jacob, and Jonathan/John were known to be living after 1910, leaving only Mary, Frank, and James as the possibly deceased child.

  Report on the death of Aaron Walker, Mariposa (California) Gazette AARON WALKER INSTANTLY KILLED WHILE AT WORK Aaron WALKER of North Fork, an employee of the Minarets and Western railroad, was accidentally killed late yesterday afternoon at Central Camp when a switching train supposedly backed into him and inflicted internal injuries from which he evidently died instantly. WALKER was a brakeman and had been employed with the company for the past nine years. There were no eye witnesses to the tragedy, as he was signaling to the train that is presumed to have struck him. One signal to go backward had been answered by the engineer and it was the continued wait for a second signal that caused the men to investigate. He was found dead by the track. On their return to Wood River the couple will take up their residence at Leslie and Enton streets where Mr. Walker has fitted up a home for his bride. When she left for Lake Taneycomo Mrs. Walker wore an ensemble of brown satin and velvet. Mrs. Walker is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Bolo of 414 Wood River avenue, Woods River. For the past three years she has been in the office of the Shell Co. Mr. Walker, who is a graduate of the University of Illinois, is in the laboratory at the Shell Co. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orange Walker of Gillespie.\"
