Died:

Edith C. (Waller) Patten's 1900 census enumeration indicated that she had borne three children, only two still living in that year. As Amelia and George D. were known to be living, "Sylvester" or "William" had probably died.

An internet source offers his death date as 11 October 1890, which fits the above. Since his parents were known to be in Washington State by 1887, he may have died in Washington.
