    Notes:

It has been a mystery to me, how Levi Henderson Walker (known as "Henderson") got all the way out to Grays Harbor County in Washington state. However, it turns out that his step-cousin, George F. DRYMAN, can be found in the same county in the 1930 census. Possibly they moved out together.

After the early death of Henderson's father (Henderson was 13), his mother married a second time to Henry Dryman, a widower who lived in the area. The George F. Dryman who moved to Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, WA was his nephew.

    Birth:
The 1880 census was taken in this home on 3 June 1880. It listed Len/Levi as 11 months old, and born in June. Hence, he was born late June 1880.

    Census:
    1. Walker, Wm. U., white, male, 24, married, tanner, Tennessee, Tennessee, Tennessee
    2. _____, Cinthy J., white, female, 19, wife, married, keeping house, Missouri, Tennessee, Tennessee
    3. _____, Levi H., white, male, 11/12, son, Missouri, Tennessee, Missouri

[William's middle initial in this enumeration was interpreted by Ancestry.com as a "W." However, a study of the enumerator's handwriting makes it more likely that it was intended as a "U." Since William's middle name was "Euen," this is an understandable error on the part of the recorder.

    Census:
    1. Cunningham, Van, head, born January 1864, 36, married 9 years, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, farmer, can read and write, owns farm free of mortgage, farm schedule no. 194

    8. Walker, Henderson, servant, white, male, June 1879, 20, single, Missouri, Missouri, Missouri, can read and write

    Census:
    1. Walker, Henderson L., head, male, white, 31, single, Kentucky, unknown, unknown, fireman, city, can read and write

    3. Cramer, Clarence, lodger, male, white, 29, single, Iowa, unknown, unknown, fireman, city, can read and write
    4. O'Brien, Frank, lodger, male, white, 25, single, unknown, unknown, unknown, fireman, city, can read and write

[While the middle initial and the state of birth are wrong, it is clear that the informant for the enumerator was G. L. Gibekey, because he was the only one with known parental birthplaces. The name, proximity, and employment as a fireman still point to the overwhelming likelihood that this is Levi Henderson Walker.]

[Notations in place of street and address. Where most entries contain a four-digit house number, Henderson's entry says "section 2." Where most entries contain a street name, written perpendicular to the entry, Henderson's appears to contain a number. The status of his residence as a roomer or renter is not clear.]

    RESEARCH:
Email from John Larson, director of the Polson Museum in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor County, Washington, sent 13 Augst 2006.

    "Hello,
Our community librarian, Roberta Holmes, passed along your research request regarding Levi Henderson Walker and his life here in Hoquiam as a fireman. Our museum, the Polson Museum, will be more than happy to do some research on Mr. Walker as well as look for photographs of the fire department around the 1920s. Our main researcher volunteers here on Wednesdays and I'll be passing along your info to him this week. I did do a preliminary search in our collections database and see that we do have a postcard of Hoquiam firefighters that lists a "Walker" as pictured. We also have another HFD photo that lists a Walker as well. I'd guess that this is the great uncle you're looking for so we'll be digging out those images this week.
I did give a call to our local mortuary, Coleman Mortuary, who has been in business here now for nearly 100 years. They handled his death arrangements and had some pretty good information on file.
Levi H. Walker was born on June 16, 1881 in Willo Springs, Missouri and he died on November 19, 1936 in Hoquiam, Washington. At the time of his death, he was a service station operator at "Walker & Sandstrom" (which we'll do some additional digging on this Wed.). He resided at 714 Hill Ave. in Hoquiam and had lived in Hoquiam for 35 years. He had a sister, M.E. Kelley, who lived in Amory, Mississippi and the records did not indicate who his mother and father were. He is buried at Sunset Memorial Park here in Hoquiam. The funeral arrangements were handled by Reuben Sandstrom who was his partner at the service station.
I took the liberty of phoning Basil Sandstrom, a member of our museum, and found out that Reuben was his father. Unfortunately, Levi Walker died when Basil was only four so he had no recollection of Mr. Walker. Basil did note that Levi dated his aunt (Reuben's sister) Mabel Sandstrom and resided with her at the home that was formerly Reuben Sandstrom's parents (Reuben lived at 722 Hill just a few houses down from his parents original home at 714). Anyway, Basil didn't really know much more about Levi as his dad never talked much about the man.
Well, I hope this info helps. I'll be writing again with more info and likely with some photographic images as well. It may take us a week or two to get things pulled together for you so stay tuned. Please feel free to contact me with any other info you think may be helpful in our search or other details you'd like us to look for.
    Sincerely,
    John Larson, Director Polson Museum

  2. 3.  Mary WalkerMary Walker Descendancy chart to this point (1.Cynthia1) was born in Jun 1881 in Missouri, USA; died between 1900-1910.

    Notes:

    Birth:
1900 printed census indicates her birth year as 1889 - however her age is 19, birth year should be 1881.

    Died:
In 1900 her mother Cynthia Dryman was enumerated as the mother of 9 children, 8 living. In 1910 she was enumerated as the mother of 10 children, 7 living. There are discrepancies here. The total numbers of children in each case are as we would expect: 9 by 1900 and (with the additional birth of Benjamin in 1901) 10 in 1910.

But which child was already dead by 1900? All nine known children were accounted for. If she had, as is likely, lost a child prior to 1900, then she was the mother of 10 children in 1900.

If, as stated in 1910, she was mother of 10 children and only 7 were living, these were the living: Henderson, John R., Nola, Thomas, Goldie, Frank, and Benjamin. Not located in 1910 are Mary, Claude, and Annie. Did Mary, Claude, and Annie all die between 1900 and 1910? Annie would have been just 12, it is likely that she would be found in her family home, if living. Mary could have married and Claude might not yet have died.

However, the most likely conclusion is that all three of these died between 1900-1910.

  3. 4.  John R. WalkerJohn R. Walker Descendancy chart to this point (1.Cynthia1) was born on 1 Aug 1884 in Willow Springs, Howell County, Missouri, USA; died on 8 Dec 1912 in Willow Springs, Howell County, Missouri, USA; was buried on 9 Dec 1912 in Moffitt Cemetery, Howell County, Missouri.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 15 Jun 1900, Hutton Valley township, Howell County, Missouri, USA
    • Census: 16 Apr 1910, 22 Hall St., Webb City, Jasper County, Missouri, USA

    Notes:

Indirect evidence demonstrates the likelihood, though not the certainty, that the John R. Walker who married Blanche McCann in Jasper County was the John R. Walker from Howell County who was the son of William E. Walker and Cynthia Cox.
    • John R. Walker's 1912 Howell County death certificate states that he was married at the time of his death, though it does not name his wife
    • A John R. Walker "of Willow Springs" married Blanche McCann in April 1909, in Jasper County, Missouri
    • John R. Walker and his new wife Blanche were enumerated in 1910, in Jasper County, Missouri
    • The John R. Walker enumerated with Blanche in 1910 Jasper County was within two years of the age of the John R. Walker of Howell County. The census informant did not know John R. Walker's parents' birthplaces and probably did not know his precise age.
    • The middle initial of "R" is shared by both
    • Although John R. Walker died in Howell County in 1912, he does not appear in Howell County in the 1910 enumeration.

In conclusion, it is likely that the John R. Walker of the 1910 Jasper County census enumeration, and the husband of Blanche McCann, is the same person as the John R. Walker who died in 1912, in Howell County, Missouri.

The 1920 census fails to find Blanche (McCann) Walker or Francis Walker.
A search of Missouri marriage records fails to find a second marriage for Blanche (McCann) Walker.
A search of the 1930 census fails to find a John Walker and wife Blanche anywhere.

    Other Events:

    • Negative evidence:
Not located in South Dakota state census, 1905 or 1915.
    • RESEARCH:
No record of the death of Claud Walker in South Dakota, searched 1 July 1905 through 31 December 1925.
    • Census: 15 Jun 1900, Hutton Valley township, Grays Harbor County, Washington, USA
    • RESEARCH: Between 1970-1990

    Notes:

Claude Walker appears, age 13, in Helton Rutherford Walker's 1900 Howell County, Missouri, census enumeration, where he is designated as "grandson." The surname "Walker" and his age point to the William E. "Bud" Walker as his father. (Bud had died in 1893 and his wife had remarried.)

No other documents naming Claud have yet been discovered. He has not been located in the 1910 census.

Information on Bud's children was obtained by Wilda (Phipps) Beasley from Ben Dryman, a child of Cynthia (Cox) Walker's second marriage. (See letter and citation.) Ben named Claud as one of the children of Bud and Cynthia and stated that he had gone to Deadwood, North Dakota (should be "South Dakota") where he died in the mines. He also indicated that Claud had never married.

I have just this morning received two messages from Jeff Reece (Rhysaprhys@aol.com) and he included in one, a message from you dated 10/27/02 - giving census records of THORNTON, WALKER, DRYMAN in Texas and Howell Co. Missouri. Back in 1981 I was corresponding with Robert Wesley Stokes, son of Eudocia (Walker) and Albert Wesley Stokes, daughter of Helton Rutherford Walker and Ester Elizabeth Thornton. Robert Stokes sent me the following list of children for William "Bud" Walker and Jane Cox: Six Children: (1) Henderson Walker (2)John Walker (3) Claude Walker (4) Nola Walker (5) Tom Walker (6) Goldie Walker After William Walker died, Jane Cox married Henry Dryman and they had 4 children; he gave me the following: (1) Frank Dryman (2) Ben Dryman 3 and 4: died young, buried: Moffett Cemetery I also corresponded with a Ben Dryman in Dec 1981 (who I presume was #2 child) and with a Mrs. Carl Caton in Dec. 1981 - they gave me the following information: Henderson Walker was a fire Chief in Okam, Washington - was married - had 1 daughter. John Walker - never maried - buried: Moffett Cemetery Claude Walker - Killed in Mines in Deadwood, N.Dakota - he never married Nola Walker - lived in Willow Springs, MO, married to Mart Kelly, had 3 children: Thelma, Basil and the other died young. Mart Kelly worked for the railroad. Nola and Mart were already deceased in 1981 Tom Walker - was in World War I - never married - died in 1918 with the flu - buried: Moffett Cemetery Goldie Walker - lived with mother and step-father - never married - buried: Moffett Cemetery. This Moffett Cemetery is in Hutton Valley - I have never gone to it - my Dad (Tim Phipps) was going to take me there, but before we got to it, my mother had a severe stroke and was in the Nursing Home in Willow Springs and we just never took the time to go. Then, my Dad passed away in 1995 and I just never took the time to go."

    Died:
Researcher Wilda (Phipps) Beasley had an opportunity in the 1970's or 1980's to interview Ben Dryman, the younger half-brother of Claude Walker. Ben stated that Claude died in the mines in "Deadwood, North Dakota" (probably actually Deadwood, South Dakota). Wilda Beasley was a descendant of Helton Rutherford Walker through his daughter Martha Jane "Mattie" (Walker) Phipps.

No date has been associated with this event. However, Claude Walker appeared in the 1900 census in the home of his Walker grandparents.

In 1900 his mother Cynthia Dryman was enumerated as the mother of 9 children, 8 living.
