Obituary, Liberal News"Alice A. Brooks
Alice A. Brooks, daughter of A. J. and Mary E. [Mary C.] Smith, was born in Fulton County, Arkansas, December 13, 1878 and departed this life at the home of a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Della Brooks, August 3, 1950, at the age of 71 years 7 months and 20 days.
Death came suddenly and very unexpected. She had gone about her usual duties of the morning when suddenly she fell, never regaining consciousness, dying about thirty minutes later. She came with her parents to Mountain View, Missouri where she grew to a young lady, there meeting and marrying Selis T. Brooks on August 6, 1896. He preceded her in death January 13, 1917. To this union were born six children. They are, Clarence of Yuma, Arizona; Ray of Mulberry, Kansas; Mrs. Zola Truskett of Liberal, Missouri and Mrs. Mary Adams of Deerfield, Missouri. A daughter, Fern, preceded her in death January 18, 1923 and a son, Virgil passed away April 1, 1949. She also leaves 22 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 4 brothers Sam and Webb Smith of Liberal, Missouri, Ben Smith of Edwardsville, Kansas; Walter of Mindenmines, Missouri, 4 sisters, Mrs. Eunice Allen, Mountain View, Missouri, Mrs. Mae Venable, Liberal, Missouri,Mrs. Flossie Percell, Joplin, Missouri and Mrs. Bertha Province of Granite City, Illinois. Also, an uncle, H. A. Walker, Liberal, Missouri. Her mother, father, 3 sisters and 4 grandchildren also preceded her in death.
In 1908 she came with her husband and family to Barton County and has spent the rest of her life in and near Liberal. At an early age she was converted at the old Walker Chapel, Howell County, Missouri, under the teachings of her Grandfather Walker, a Methodist minister. She remained true tot he church and God throughout her life. A few years ago she moved her membership to the Hannon Free-Will Baptist church.
The passing of this dear mother, will be deeply felt by her many loved ones. She was ever busy going abut from one home to the other doing for each the many kindnesses and loving things that she could. When we think how we shall miss her,
Our hearts are filled with pain,
But we try to think that our loss
Is for her a gain.
For she?ll have no more heartaches,
No more sickness, grief or care
And we feel that she?s at peace
In the Home over there.
Funeral services were conducted at the Hannon Church Sunday afternoon by Rev. Boyd Thornton assisted by the pastor of Hannon, Mrs. Lowell Martin. Three beautiful songs were rendered by the Hannon Quartet and Mrs. Boyd Thornton assisted at the piano by Mrs. Jean Williams.
The pallbearers were grandson, James, Doc, Glenn, Russel andRoy Brooks and Gene Truskett.
Interment was made at the Shiloh Cemetery by the side of her husband, son, daughter, and 4 grandchildren. Under direction of Berkey Funeral Service at Arcadia, witnessed by a large crowd of friends. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bookrs, Glenn and Roy of Yuma, Arizona; Ben Smith of Edwardsville, Kans.? Mr. and Mrs. Bill Province, Granite City, Ill.? mrs. Flossie Percell, Joplin; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Allen, Mt. View; Mr. and Mrs. Halis allen, Springfield; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen, Ft. May E. (Smith) Hoop's family was enumerated without her in 1940, in Oregon. Her husband Charles is enumerated as "divorced," though his 1958 Josephine County death certificate names his wife as "Mae Hoop."
An interview with Bonnie Compton (descendant of Mary C. Walker's brother Helton Alanson Walker) indicated that May also married Clarence Allen Venable, but with no information as to when or where. Were Charles and May divorced? Clarence A. Venable was a married near neighbor to Charles and May in the 1910 Barton Co MO census. Did may return to Missouri from California or Oregon? Were they divorced and she married a possibly widowed Clarence Venable? The same interview indicated May's death in Barton County in 1973.
