Mary Ann "Polly" George was first married to a Gray/Grey. After her second marriage to Elisha Meadows, she is found in the 1850 census. In the household is a Joseph Grey, age 22 and a Jane Grey, age 17. Joseph would have been born about 1828, a little earlier than I had postulated Polly's marriage, but she would have been 21, so it is certainly possible. Relationshps are not specified in the 1850 census, so Jane could have been either her daughter, born about 1833--or Joseph's wife, living in the household.

Joseph could also have been some other Grey/Gray relative. It seems likely, however, that he was a son and that Jane was a daughter.

If the "Maryan Gray" household found in 1840 Floyd County, Kentucky, is indeed Mary Ann "Polly" George, it is likely that she was widowed prior to 1840. Since Alexander was born in 1845, it seems that he was probably her son with Elisha Meadows. Confusing the issue somewhat, his older sister Nancy and Clerissa/Clarisa were enumerated in 1850 with the implied surname of "Meadows," rather than "Gray."

Sarah V. Gray's birth record names her mother as "Nancy E. Gray" and states that the birth was illegitimate, naming no father.

Birth record names her as "Anna E. Gray" and the 1860 census enumerates her as "Elizabeth Gray."

No father is listed for Anna E. Gray in her birth record. Her mother is named as "Clarissa A. Gray." It appears that Anna Elizabeth Gray was born out of wedlock of an unidentified father.

Though no birth record has been discovered for Mary A. Gray, the record for her sister Anna Elizabeth, two years prior, lists no father. Since both Anna and Mary carry their mother's maiden surname, it is likely that they were born out of wedlock to an unknown father or fathers.
