  Is it a coincidence that Samuel Allen Walker is found next to a Samuel Allen in the 1818 Madison County, Illinois, census? An internet search finds that Samuel Allen was the son of Thomas Allen and Margaret Bryan. Bio:

  "The 1873 newspaper, The White Hall Register, has a detailed biographical sketch of Thomas Allen and his brother, Zachariah Allen and states: the ?progenitor of the Allen family, came from Tennessee to Madison County, stopping near Upper Alton, about as early as any other white settlers in that region. His wife was a Miss Bryant having been married in Tennessee. His house at Belltown was the first house built north of Apple Creek, in Greene County. Author's note: It appears that Thomas and Zachariah may have lived in Davidson County, Tennessee prior to migrating to Greene County, Illinois. However, Thomas Allen married Margaret Bryan in 1789 in Rowan County, North Carolina (not in Tennessee as stated in the newspaper article). The newspaper article continues: Thomas Allen 'was a sociable, cheerful and a real philosopher. He was a Calvinist seceder from the Presbyterian Church. He died at Belltown about 1835.' Birth:

WorldConnect file indicates that Samuel A. Walker was born in "Amhurst" [Amherst], Virginia. The bio of Samuel's daughter Eliza says that he lived on the James River in Virginia. The James River does, indeed, run through Amherst County.

The same WorldConenct file indicates that Samuel's parents were Jacob Walker and Elizabeth Poage, attributed to Noble Sheatsley (tynwd@msn.com). An internet search reveals that Mr. Sheatsley is deceased.

A search on FamilySearch for Jacob Walker and Elizabeth Poage comes up dry, but a Jacob Walker was christened 3 February 1760 to Phillip Walker and Susannah Hilton, in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia.

This brings in the names Phillip, Jacob, and Hilton [Helton].

Biography of Eliza A. (Walker) Paul

Mrs. Eliza A. Paul, a pioneer of Marshall County, residing on section 26, Blue Rapids City Township, is a native of Madison County, Ill., but when a child was taken to Rock Island County, Ill., by her parents. She was born Jan. 26, 1836. She was a daughter of the Rev. Samuel A. and Nancy (Thompson) Walker. Her father was a native of Virginia, and of English descent, his ancestors having come to this country with the Jamestown Colony. Her mother was of Irish ancestry and a native of Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Walker were early settlers of Rock Island County, Ill., in which they had located immediately after the Black Hawk War. To them were born five children, of whom three now survive: Sarah, the wife of Samuel Swank, whose home is in Otoe County, Neb.; Mrs. Paul, and Mary, now the widow of William Lemon, in Ohio. The deceased bore the names of Harriet and Julia, respectively. Mrs. Paul grew to maturity in her native county and State, acquiring her education largely under the instruction of her father, who was a teacher, as well as a pioneer preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the time of Mrs. Paul's youth, public schools were not known in Illinois, and the instruction which she received outside her home was acquired in private schools.

On June 30, 1853, Eliza Walker was married in Rock Island County, to William Paul, a native of County Antrim, Ireland, born Feb. 16, 1830. He was a son of Samuel and Martha Paul, and of remote Scotch ancestry. The union of Mr. and Mrs. Paul resulted in the birth of five children: Martha, the wife of Thomas Short; S. Frank' Sarah, wife of J. N. Wannamaker; Clara, wife of Wesley Miller, and William, all living in this county.

Mr. Paul, when seventeen years old emigrated to America, and remained for a short time in Quebec, Canada. Thence he removed to St. Lawrence County, N.Y., where he resided about three years. He went to Rock Island county, Ill., where he remained until 1859. he then with his wife and family emigrated to this county, and homesteaded eighty acres of land, which comprises a part of the estate on which his widow still lives. The land was raw prairie, and Mr. Paul was practical without means when he settled upon. At his death he left an estate valued at about $10,000. This success resulted from the industry and energy of the young couple, who endured many of the privations consequent to pioneer life, and practiced great self-denial in the earlier years of their residence in the State. Mr. Paul found an efficient helpmate and counselor in his wife. She retains possession of the home farm, owning 180 acres of land there, and fifty-fivee acres in Blue Rapids Township.

Mr. Paul was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he was a Republican. He had served as a member of the School Board of his district and likewise as Justice of the Peace. During the Civil War he served nearly three years in the Union army, the most of that time being spent in fighting the guerillas in Arkansas and the Indian Territory, together with some raids in Missouri. His death, which occurred Aug. 12, 1886, was occasioned by disease contracted in the army. In his death the county lost one of her earliest pioneers and most respected citizens. He was always in favor of those movements which would tent to improve and elevate society, and advance the interests of the county. He was a kind and loving father and husband, and his death was regretted by all who knew him.

Mrs. Paul being one of the earliest settlers in this part of the county, enjoys an extended acquaintance, and is an active member of society. She is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and is held in high respect by all who know her.

Biography of Samuel Francis Paul, son of Eliza A. (Walker) Paul

Samuel Francis Paul, a native son of the state of Illinois, and today one of the most progressive and substantial farmers and stockmen of Marshall county, and the representative of the Thirty-ninth district to the state Legislature, was born at Rock Island on January 28, 1856, the son of William and Eliza A. (Walker) Paul, who were natives of Belfast, Ireland, and Madison county, Illinois, respectively.

William Paul was born on February 16, 1830, and died on August 12, 1889. . . .[He] located at Rock Island, Illinois, where he engaged in general farming. There he was married on June 30, 1853 to Eliza A. Walker, who was born on January 26, 1836, being the daughter of Samuel A. Walker and wife, who were natives of Virginia, their early home being on the banks of the James river, and where her father was born in 1785. He was one of the early settlers of Madison county, Illinois, and was a well-known Methodist minister of that section. After having spent many years in the work in the county, Mr. Walker moved to Rock Island and in 1858 moved to Marshall county, and later died in Nebraska City, Nebraska. His life was one of usefulness, and his influence on the moral and the social life of the community, was for the general good. The life of a minister was a hard one in those days, yet Mr. Walker accepted his responsibilities with a determination that brought success to his work. He was held in the highest regard by all with whom he came in contact, and his influence for the better life was keenly felt throughout the district in which he worked. He was a man of the highest ideals and of pleasing qualities. To him the people of Madison county were greatly indebted for the high standard of morality that he set in that early pioneer settlement.

To William and Eliza Paul were born the following children: Martha A., Samuel Francis, Sadie L., Clara P. and William F. Martha A. Johnson is a resident of Sheridan, Arkansas; Sadie L. Wanamaker resides at Blue Rapids, Kansas; Clara P. Miller lives at Clepsen Beach, Washington, and William F. lives at Edna, Texas.

  Biography of Samuel Swank, Otoe County, Nebraska. Longfellow has most truly remarked in one of his exquisitely realistic poems, that "Into each life some rain must fall, some days must be dark and dreary," but the problem that has stirred many hearts is, why so much more rain falls into some lives than into others. The subject of our sketch is one whose life has been constantly overshadowed by clouds of trouble and trial, and the sunlight and brightness have been fitful and intermittent, but at the same time his constant struggle and manful conflict have resulted in the building up of an exceptionally fine character, and beautifying a most appreciable spirit.   The subject of our sketch is the son of Joseph and Littas (Van Metri) Swank, who were married to Kentucky, and from that State removed to Indiana. They were the parents of eleven children, and our subject, who was born on the 10th of January, 1827, was their seventh child. The place of his nativity was Harrison County, Ind. When about eleven months old, his parents removed to Montgomery County, where the father died when our subject was about four and a half years old; being left thus early without paternal care and wealth, it is not surprising, that his education was limited by circumstances and for the same reason much curtailed. When twenty-one years of age, he went to Rock Island County, Ill. In 1847 Mr. Swank was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Walker, the daughter of Samuel A, and Nancy A. Walker, who was born in Madison County, Ill., in the year 1830. He became the owner of sixty acres of land at Rock Island, Ill., and there remained until 1858, when he removed with his wife and child to Marshall County, Kan., where he settled. Later they became pioneers of Richardson County, Neb., and were there throughout the Nebraska and Kansas troubles that necessarily aroused so much strong feeling among the advocates of either side of the question. Leaving Kansas, our subject removed to Missouri, and lived in that State at the time of the Civil War. July 3, 1863, he enlisted in the 13th Kansas Infantry, and served in the Southwestern Division of the army. His military career, while it did not bring him prominently before the people as a great soldier, was one of honor, devotion and patriotism, and, like so many others, he during that period performed every duty for home and native land in the best possible manner, and earned the reward that always comes to those who are swayed by high principles, and who faithfully follow the dictates thereof. At the conclusion of the war, with health impaired, Mr. Swank returned to Missouri and again took up the more ordinary avocations of life, remaining here with his family until 1868, when he came to this State and took up his present homestead of eighty acres, which he succeeded in bringing to a very high state of cultivation by the help and assistance of others. From the time of his military service, and as a result thereof, his sight had begun to fail and he became almost blind, but in that affliction has been supported and sustained by his own patient spirits, and the affection of his family. The home circle of our subject included four children, viz: William E., Cora J., Caroline A. and Arthur E. William E. is married to Miss Tucker, of Nebraska, and resides in California; they are the parents of one beautiful little daughter, Lena. Cora J. is the wife of L. H. Bertz, and resides at Bennet; they too have a daughter, who is named Hattie J. Caroline A. is happily married to James Malcomb, and has presented her husband with two children, who are named McCoy E. and George Samuel. Our subject is in political affairs a stanch Republican, but has been prevented taking the active part he would have desired by reason of his blindness. Religiously, he is connected with the Latter-Day Saints, and is one of the consistent and devout members of that community. He is one of the capable and much esteemed citizens of his district.

  Eliza Adaline WALKER was born January 26, 1836 at Rock Island, Ill., and entered into life everlasting on Sept. 4, 1928, at Blue Rapids, Kansas, aged 92 years, 7 months and 9 days. She was the daughter by a second marriage of the Rev. Samuel A. WALKER. Her mother was Nancy Thompson WALKER. The Rev. Samuel WALKER was a pioneer Methodist minister born in 1785. The two generations, Mrs. PAUL and her father, reaching back to the signing of the Constitution of the United States. Mrs. PAUL's early life was spent at Rock Island, where she was married to Wm. PAUL in 1853. In 1859 they came west to carve out a new home in what was then the territory of Kansas, with the thought of helping to settle it with sympathizers for the Union. After the firing on Ft. Sumpter, Wm. PAUL answered his country's call for volunteers and left his little family in the care of their mother and joined the 13th Kansas Volunteer Infantry, staying in the army until he was honorably discharged at the close of the civil war. There was a very good school at this time at Irving called the Wetmore Institute, and after the close of the war, Wm. PAUL took advantage of the homestead law and homesteaded 80 acres of land two miles north of Irving in the Blue River valley, where their children had the advantage of a very good school. Later they added to the 80 acres by purchase. The old home remained in Mrs. PAUL's hands until her death, helping to make her last days comfortable and peaceful. Mrs. PAUL was the proud mother of five children: Mrs. Martha RIPPEY of Sheridan, Ark.; S.F. PAUL of Blue Rapids, deceased two years ago; Mrs. J.N. WANAMAKER of Blue Rapids; Mrs. Clara WILLIAMSON of Portland, Ore.; and W.F. PAUL of Huntsville, Texas; 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, making 76 descendants. Every year on her birthday and on Christmas she heard from the members of this large family, knew where they all were and what they were doing, claiming all of them as her own. Wm. PAUL was called to his reward in 1889 and for nearly forty years she traveled the journey of life alone. Thinking and planning for the welfare of her family and doing for others filled her later years and helped to make her sunset years peaceful and happy. She spent the last 31 years of her life in the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.N. WANAMAKER. If long life and length of days are given to the faithful, then indeed she was recompensed. Her children rise up and call her blessed.

In conflict with this, numerous unsourced internet sources offer a death year for Angelica of 1874. Supporting her earlier death, Stephen Best's 1954 death certificate states that his parents were Elbert Best and Ruth Davis, and he was born on 25 October 1877. [sic] August 13, 1840, died at the home of her nephew, P. C. Walker in Stanberry, Mo., April 20, 1924, aged 83 years, 6 months and 7 days. She was united in marriage to Wm. P. Sinclair in the spring of 1863. She came to Missouri with her husband, mother and others of the family in the spring of 1865, settling in Gentry county. She spent the rest of her life in this county, with the exception of about two years spent in the southern part of the state. Her husband preceded her in death some thirty years ago, She leaves to mourn her loss two brothers, S.E. Walker of Gentry, Mo. and E. W. Walker of Albany, Mo., and one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Hopkins of Tingley, Iowa, a number of nephews and neices [sic] and a host of friends. Mrs. Sinclair was of a family of twelve children, all of whom preceded her in death except the above named. All that loving hands could do was done to relieve her suffering which for the last two months was almost unendurable. Mrs. Sinclair made no profession but was a firm believer in, and practiced the doctrines of the Church of God, and was always ready to defend the same from the sacred word. She was always ready to contribute in any way possible to relieve those in need and made her friends by her acquaintances. Thus has ended a life that has been an open book to the world and one that has not been filled with false pretentious. We commit her life unto Him who loves us and who will reward every good work.   The Stanberry Herald, obituary: Anthony Green Walker

  Anthony Green Walker was born in Illinois, July 16, 1845, died Dec. 22, 1918 at the age of 73 years, 5 months, and 6 days. The subject of this obituary was thrice married, his first marriage in 1866. His first wife being Missourian Oklhanson. One son was born of this union, Samuel Wesley, who died in June 1918. His companion died in 1869, and he was again married to Harriet A. Bogue, Jan. 22, 1870. To this union six children were born, one dying in infancy. This wife and mother died June 11, 1884. He was again united in marriage to Chrisanna Nelson March 31, 1886. Five children were born to them. He leaves his widow Chrisanna and ten living children to mourn his loss. His children, Frank, Chester, Quincy, Anthony, Earl, and Oliver, Mrs. Fannie Baker, Mrs. Tobie Summa, Mrs. Cleo Rucker, and Mrs. Minnie Neal. These were all present at the funeral except Earl, who is a soldier with the colors in France. He also leaves two brothers, Ell and Edmond Walker, also two sister, Mrs. Mary Hopkins, and Pletna SinClair. These were present at the funeral except Mrs. SinClair who was not able to attend. Deceased also had twenty-eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Brother Walker united with the Church of God about thirty-two years ago. And during this time has been active and earnest in his work. He has held offices in the General Conference. His son, Chester, being now, and has been for some time, Secretary of the General Conference. The great features of Brother Walker's life was his faith and hope and unbounded trust in the Word of God. He would impress a stranger, seeing him for the first time, as being a very unusual man in this respect, and it is not too much to say that as a neighbor, a friend, or good counselor, he was loved by all who knew him. He will be missed in our gatherings here at Stanberry and elsewhere, where for many years he was always present. Services were held Dec. 24, in the Church of God at Stanberry, and Bro. Walker was laid to rest in the High Ridge Cemetery to await the Master's call. This was the source of comfort to our brother before his decease and this hope sustained him to the last. His companion and children did everything for his relief and comfort. Fondly we hope, sincerely do we believe that this good brother's life and example, will remain though he is gone, and in the resurrection morn he may be called to life where infirmity or death will never be known. May God bless and sustain his aged companion and children in this hour of trial and bereavement.

  Obituary of Thomas J. Jones, husband of Cleopatra Walker, Mariposa (California) Gazette, 13 July 1918 THOMAS JEFFERSON JONES PASSES AWAY IN MODESTO Rev. Thomas J. JONES was born in Hopkinsville, Christian county, Kentucky, on May 13, 1828; died in Modesto, California, June 28, 1918, being 90 years 1 month and 15 days of age. At the age of 18 years he was converted and joined the Methodist church. When 23 years of age he went to Edwardsville, Illinois, and engaged in the carpenter trade. In 1853 he came to California, overland, spending six months on the way. During five years he mostly followed the fortunes of a gold prospector with varying success, then returned to Edwardsville, Ill., aboard ships by the Panama route. There he met Cleopatra WALKER, to whom he was married on June 23, 1858. In 1868 he moved his family to Cherokee county, Kansas, where he adopted the life of a pioneer farmer. The next year there was a revival meeting held in a little log school house, where he felt an urgent call to preach the gospel. He gave his life to the service, becoming a local preacher in the M. E. church. He traveled miles and miles on foot or horseback to preach to the settlers in their cabins or in the little school houses. In 1880 he moved his family overland to California, the land of his dreams. During the nest six years his home was near Sacramento. Then again in 1886 he moved to Whiterock, Mariposa county, where he engaged in stock ranching, continuing however, to preach wherever his services were needed. For many years he was Justice of the peace in the Whiterock district. He served the community faithfully as preacher, Sunday school superintendent or teacher, and as Judge of the Justice Court. He performed the marriage ceremony for many of the young people and conducted the funeral services of the greater part of those who were laid to rest in the Whiterock cemetery as it filled up year after year. In 1912 his faithful and loving companion was called home. Since then he made his home with his daughter in Modesto. From that time, on account of his increasing age, he ceased his ministerial labors, but was a faithful attendant upon Sunday school and church services up to the last Sunday of his life. On Tuesday, June 25th, the absent members of the family were called, and on the 28th he passed quietly away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bertha ASHURST. On Saturday afternoon Rev. PITMAN of the first Presbyterian church, conducted a very appropriated funeral service at the undertaking parlors of Wood and Shannon where a large number of his friends were present. On Sunday morning relatives arrived in LeGrand with the remains, and were joined by friends here who accompanied them to Whiterock cemetery, where they laid him to rest besides his beloved wife. A large number of his former neighbors were present. Rev. NEEDHAM of M. E. Church South conducted the services at the grave and the LeGrand choir rendered beautiful and appropriate music. He leaves to mourn his demise, four children: Mrs. C. M. SMITH of LeGrand; Mrs. Bertha ASHURST and Mrs. P. J. LEARY of Modesto, and Thomas J. JONES of Lewis. - Le Grand Advocate, July 5.

It is not clear how the bride in this article relates to the family of Thomas J. and Cleopatra (Walker) Jones. However, several things point to a relationship.

The bride's name, Josephine Jones, is the same as the daughter of Cleopatra (Walker) Jones. However, a check of California marriage records indicates that this Josephine Jones who married Charles M. Smith was only 21 years old.

Guests at the wedding were "Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Jones" (probably Thomas J. and Cleopatra), and also included people with the surname Ashurst, including a Josie M. Ashurst. Present in the 1900 Mariposa County census enumeration of Thomas J. and Cleopatra Jones was their granddaughter Josephine M. Ashurst.

Confusingly, Thomas J. Jones' 1918 obit refers to his daughter "Mrs. C. M. Smith" though his daughter Alice Bertha did not lose her Ashurst husband until 1919 and did not marry Charles Richard Smith until 1921.

I think the Josephine being married in this article is probably the Josephine who was named as granddaughter Josephine Ashurst, in their 1900 census home. Possibly they adopted their granddaughter? Her parents must have been the Alice Bertha (Jones) Ashurst and her husband, living next door in 1900.

Walker filed suit in the district court yesterday to set aside a decree of divorce which the court granted to John R. Walker October 10, 1904.   ARCENITH F. WALKER, one of the prominent retired farmers of Neosho township, Cherokee County, who owns a well improved farm of 80 acres in section 12, township 34, range 22, was born in Madison County, Illinois, January 11, 1845, and is a son of Elijah and, Charity (Dove) Walker. The father of our subject was a farmer in Illinois for a number of years. During the gold excitement in California, in 1850, he made the overland trip to the mining regions, but never returned, his death taking place there when our subject was six years old. The mother of Arcenith F. Walker was born in Virginia, went then to Tennessee and from there to Illinois, and her death took place at Columbus, Kansas, when in her 74th year. The children of Elijah and Charity (Dove) Walker were: Mrs. Mary Morrisey, of Illinois; Cleopatra, of California; John, of Wichita, Kansas; Arcenith F., of this sketch; Mrs. Lucetta Burke, of Columbus; and Mrs. Zanetta Ellsworth, of Columbus. Mr. Walker remained on the home farm in Illinois until he was 16 years of age and then enlisted for service in the Civil War, one of the youngest soldiers to offer his loyal services to his country at that unhappy time. He entered Company K, 10th Reg., Illinois Vol. Inf., under Col. James D. Morgan, served three years and received an honorable discharge on August 24, 1864. He participated in many severe battles and served in the Atlanta campaign and in the Army of the Cumberland under General Thomas. After his return from the army, Mr. Walker resumed farming in Madison County, Illinois, and after a short residence in Missouri and Michigan, came in 1867 to Cherokee County, Kansas, driving the whole distance. Here he secured 160 acres of wild land on which he erected a box house 12 by 14 feet in dimensions and lived there until he had broken 50 acres, when he sold the property to advantage and removed to his present farm in Neosho township. As there was no house here, the family camped out until one was built. Mr. Walker worked very hard on this place, which shows the results in its good improvements, fine cultivation and general air of comfort and thrift. With his own hands he set out the beautiful walnut grove and made all the other improvements which converted it into a comfortable home. This property he now rents, having retired from active farming operations. On November 15, 1864, Mr. Walker was married to Lucinda A. Legrand, who was born in St. Clair County, Illinois, June 19, 1847, and they had nine children: John, of Lyon township; Mrs. Jennie Newton, deceased; Edward, of Lola township; William, of Lyon township; Stephen L., an attorney at Columbus, who is represented in this volume; Daniel A., a dentist at McCune, Crawford County; Frederick A., an attorney at Weir City; Richard, a student in the County High School; and Myrtle, who died at the age of one and a half years. Politically Mr. Walker is a Republican. He is a valued member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He is one of the men of whom their fellow citizens speak with respect and esteem. While his life in this section has been one of much toil, he has accumulated a competency which permits him, while little past middle life, to enjoy its fruits.

Since his parents were married in August 1854, and his mother died in April 1955, it is likely that he was born in 1855--his mother may have died in childbirth.

Died:

A letter written by Samuel A. Walker's granddaughter states that Harriet Ann Walker married a man named Williams, "he died" a year or so later. The "he" is probably a typographic error in the typescript, as Harriet Ann Walker Williams' cemetery marker in Rock Island County, Illinois, shows that she died in April 1855, about a year after her marriage.

The letter from a granddaughter, rendered as typescript, was published in the newspaper around 1936. In it she stated that Harriet's son "grew up and married and died about forty years ago," leaving a wife and two children. The letter went on to say that his widow remarried and the family had lost track of them.

He went to collect his pay and inform the man he was quitting. The next day his lifeless body was found hanging in a barbed wire fence. A revolver was found on the ground. There were no ballistics tests. It seems he had stolen the gun from a visitor's buggy the Sunday before. I have to wonder why he felt he needed a gun. I spoke to the Madison Co. coroner, but there were no transcripts from the inquest."
