    • Note: Abt 1883;
      When fourteen years old, Paul H. Wesley ran away from his grandfather's "palatial home" in Port Chester.
      " 'Herb' Wesley, he mused today, did not get along well with his wealthy father, whose great red brick mansion on North Regent Street was the most massive structure of its kind in this section and looked out, from its eminence, upon hundreds of acres of cultivated land, meadows, sheep, and cattle pastures. The boy, each day, was driven to Peck's Institute in Greenwich by one of the several Wesley coachmen--a light carriage and spirited pair of horses making the trip possible with what was great speed in those days. "But a motherless home and a sternly disciplined school stirred the high spirited well-developed lad to rebellion. One day he disappeared. Several years passed--no word came from him to a father who was anxious though unbending in his resentment of the boy's conduct.--Then, as suddenly as he had gone, 'Herb' Wesley came back--to recover from a rifle wound he had suffered while adventuring in strife-ridden Mexico. "Physically, mentally and in experience, the boy by then had become a man. As his injury healed and his strength returned, the lure of the open road again gripped him. Off he went--never again to return until yesterday. More than four decades of varied experiences filled that interlude. There were fourteen years of roaming up and down and back and forth across the country as a 'tramp printer'--his father had been a printer, his grandfather had been a printer, his brother was a printer, and he found himself possessed of a natural aptitude for the trade. "Finally, somehow, 'Herb' Wesley found himself settled at Murrells Inlet, South Carolina--on the verge of a vast wilderness and in a little town founded by pirates who infested the South Atlantic seaboard during the years preceding the Revolutionary War. He had come there to work and fish and hunt, but had been captivated by the flashing black eyes of a girl--and he has been there ever since. "From printing he turned to sign painting, and from sign painting he went to farming. The forests were literally infested with game and the streams abounding in fish. Gradually the section about Murrells Inlet became a favorite haunt for wealthy Northerners who came to shoot and fish. Many of them knew or had heard of 'Herb' Wesley's father, for years a powerful figure in the financial district of New York, and these men became both fast friends of the younger Wesley and frequent visitors to his picturesque home. They retained him as their guide and companion on sporting expeditions. "Yes, 'Herb' Wesley prospered--in more ways than one. He ha married happily and was the father of several sturdy youngsters. With growing responsibility and contentment he lost his wanderlust. Murrells Inlet, between the sea and the forest, never will lose him. There he resides in utter happiness with his wife and their children--a son who is a full-grown man, and five daughters. . . . "One of Wesley's achievements has been the writing of a song, Moonbeams on the Strand, which has brought him a handsome competence in royalties. That song reveals, perhaps, the reason why 'Herb' Wesley never left Murrells Inlet, for in part it sings, 'Golden sand, I'm lonesome; swirling tides, I'm blue--when the day is o'er I'm yearning, for a sight of you'. . . "Paul H. Wesley's father, the late Edward B. Wesley, founded the New York Tiimes in 1851, in company with Harry J. Raymond and George Jones. Wesley was the business man of the combine and subsequently, in addition to his success with the Times, he helped found the Union Trust Company, the Park Bank and the Nassau Bank in New York."
