    • Biography: From vol. 2 of \"Texas County, Missouri, Heritage\":\"COUNTY HISTORY: Texas County, Missouri, Heritage, Vol. 2; Texas County Genealogical & Historical Society; 1989; P.O. Box 12, Houston MO 65483; pp. 587-590 \"The McKinney Family The first of the McKinney clan to settle in south Texas County arrived about 1845. James William McKinney and his wife Sarah (Gouge) McKinney settled on the headwaters of Indian Creek sourtheast of Houston. At the time under discussion, two major roads crossed near James McKinney\'s home: the White River Road (traditionally established as a branch of the \"Trail of Tears\" for relocation of the Cherokees) ran northeast to southwest, and the Thomasville Road from Houston to the Oregon County seat crossed just north of the Ozark Baptist Church. A portion of the Thomasville roadbed can yet be seen in the Ozark Cemetery. In 1988 Harlin and Irene Ice live on the old homestead. James William McKinney was born in Campbell County, TN, in 1790 and died in 1873. Sarah Gouge was born in North Carolina in 1792 and died in 1874. Both are buried in Ozark Cemetery southeast of Houston. Their families made up part of the \"Tennessee Settlement\" in Cole County, MO, moving to an area on the Moniteau River about 1816. That settlement consisted of several families whose names later became well-known in Texas County, including the McKinney, Gouge and Chambers families. A few years after James McKinney\'s father, Henry McKinney died (1836), James, Sarah and twelve of their thirteen children moved to Texas County. In the 1870\'s and 1880\'s it was said that the extended family owned almost all the land in the Indian Creek drainage area, from Houston to the divide between the Current River and Piney River watersheds, located two miles west of Yukon. Family tradition indicates that James hunted extensively, and bore scars from wounds received from a bear. Most of the McKinneys were farmers; some ventured into politics. At least one earned his living as a blacksmith, and several were active in the timber and mining industries. The eldest of James and Sarah\'s children, Caswell, was born in 1810 in Campbell County, TN. He married Anna Murray in Cole County, MO, in 1831, and they had four children. They lived their lives in Texas County and are buried in the Ozark Cemetery. Caswell had nephews named after him, so it is uncertain which Caswell was the blacksmith-at least one was. In the mid- 1800\'s, a blacksmith shop existed on the site of the present-day Ozark Baptist Church parking lot. This would have been just south of the White River/Thomasville crossroads and possibly was the site of Caswell\'s blacksmith shop. Keziah (Hazy) McKinney came next to James and Sarah in 1812 in Campbell County, TN. She married Wilburn Gilmore on Christmas day, 1828, in Cole County, MO; she and Wilburn moved to Texas County and settled about three or four miles of southeast of Houston. Keziah and Wilburn Gilmore had 12 children. David Mckinney was easily the most prolific of James and Sarah\'s children. Their third-born, David, fathered seventeen children by two wives and had two step-children. He was born in 1814 in Campbell County, TN, and married Nancy Wade of Cole County, MO, in 1837. She died in 1862, two years after the birth of their eleventh child. David married Isabelle Aby Winningham the next year, by whom he had six children. David settled on a large farm adjoining that of his father on the west and south, owned and occupied by Julius and Janet Fraley. David was active in both church affairs and politics, serving for many years as the church clerk at Ozark Baptist Church and as the clerk for the Texas County Baptist Association for several years in its infancy. He served three terms as judge of the county court, and as public administrator and as justice of the peace. David died in 1900, and he and his wives are buried at Ozark Cemetery. Calvin, the last of James and Sarah\'s children born in Tennessee, arrived in Sept of 1816. He married Rowene (Roweaney?) Gilmore in Cole County and moved to Texas County with other members of the McKinney family. Family tradition accounts that Rowene was at least part Indian, perhaps full-blooded. Calvin and Rowene had ten children and are thought to be buried in the Gilmore Cemetery abour one mile northwest of Yukon, but no grave marker with their name exists there. Susanna was born to James and Sarah Mckinney in 1819 and married James Smith in Cole County in 1845. They lived somewhere between Houston and the Ozark community and are buried in the Ozark Cemetery. They had three children. Andrew, b. Jan 31, 1821, in Cole County, married Hannah Smith in Cole County Jan 27, 1842. They, too, are buried in the Ozark Cemetery and had eight children. James, b. 1823 married Margaret Ann ___ first, then he married Mary Catherine Drennon on Apr. 15, 1855, in Texas County. James had three children by his first wife, and three by Mary Catherine Drennon. Their burial place is unknown. Serene McKinney was born May 17, 1825 in Cole County and married Dabney Lynch of Texas County Sept. 23, 1847. They had six children and were prominent in Houston business and politics. Millie McKinney was born in Cole County in Apr. of 1827 and married David Woodruff Lynch of Texas County. They also had six children. Sarah McKinney, b. 1830 in Cole County, married William Basnet there Oct. 1, 1846. She is the nly one of James and Sarah\'s children who remained to live her life in Cole County. She and William Basnet had at least one son who came to Texas County for the family reunion at which time the tombstone for James William McKinney and Sarah Gouge McKinney was set; ther were probably other children. Henry McKinney, b. in Cole County in 1832, first married Elizabeth Manley of Texas County. They had six children, and after Elizabeth died in 1877, Henry married the next year to Nancy Jane Chambers Gooch Fletcher. They had one daughter. Iva Candice was born to James and Sarah in 1834 and married James Ed Drennon, according to family tradition. They had two children before James Drennon died in 1859. No further mention of Iva Candice has yet come to light, but she apparently died between 1860 and 1870, possibly during the Civil War. Their burial place is also unknown. Melva Ann McKinney, the youngest of James and Sarah McKinney\'s children, was born in 1837. She married John Henry Coats, but died during or shortly after the birth of their only child. She is buried in the Union Cemetery west of Houston.\'
