Mrs. Burk was born May 23, 1907, in West Plains, Mo. the daughter of the late Harry J. and Jessie H. (Storey) Dugger. She was united in married on April 7, 1927, in Springfield, to Charles E. Hart. To this union was born a daughter, Maxine, and a son, J.D. Following Charles\' death in 1955, she was united in marriage in 1958 to Roy Burk. Roy preceded her in death in 1968. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and L. U. \"Red\" Dugger. Merle was a member of First Baptist Church, Springfield, and enjoyed playing cards and checkers. She was a great seamstress, but her greatest joy was taking care of her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Maxine Hart and her companion, Robert Shipley; granddaughter Rita Loather and husband Craig; great-grandsons, Mark Feuerbacker and wife Kristen, Mark Feuerbacher and wife Shawna, and Brad Fewuerbacher and wife Jennifer; great-granddaughters, Lauren and Brooke Loather; great-granddaughter Brenda \"Buffy\" Butler and husband Geoffrey; great-granddaughters, Nikki Butler; great-grandson Sam Butler; a son, J.D. Hart and his wife, Nancy; great granddaughters, Deanna Roudenis, Sara Nicholson and Elizabeth Weaver; a brother, Dwight Dugger; a sister, Gail Zeigel; and many other relatives and friends. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to the residents, families and caregivers of James River Care Center. He was born Oct. 17, 1920, in Springfield, Mo., to Harry Jefferson and Jessie Storey Dugger. He was a well-known plastering contractor and owner of Dugger Plastering Co., in Springfield until his retirement in 1987. He was a World War II Army veteran serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, Aleutian Islands. He was a mess sergeant in Army hospitals overseas for three years in a supervisory capacity. He attended first grade at Doling Elementary School. His family moved to North Missouri when he was six years old and he attended school there. Even though he was not able to get a higher education, his love for reading and keeping up with current affairs allowed him to become a successful businessman. His family moved back to Springfield when he was 19 and he worked for a short time in a cabinet shop and later got a job at the Cat and Fiddle restaurant as a cook for $1.00 a day, riding a bicycle to and from work. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gladys Watson Dugger; a daughter, Betty Bird and husband, Morris, Lockwood; six grandchildren, Rebecca Bloxham, Apache Jct., Ariz., Allen Bird, Willard, Deborah Stoll, Lamar, David Bird and Stephen Bird, both of Provo, Utah, and Jennifer Bird, Lockwood; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Merle Burk, Springfield, and Gail Zeigel, Albany, Mo.; two brothers, Lester Dugger, Springfield, and Dwight Dugger, Missoula, Mont.; his father-in-law, Joe B. Watson, Springfield; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. He loved to write poetry and short articles, many of which have been published in local papers and magazines. \"Red\" was a member of the Springfield Contractors Association and past exalted rule of C.P.O.E. Elks $409, and a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church. No visitation is planned, but friends may call after noon today in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home under direction of Bob and Don Lohmeyer. Burial will be in Rivermonte Memorial Gardens. He is a World War II and Vietnam veteran. While still on active duty, Lloyd married Dorothy Olsen in 1944. He has made Montana his home for over 50 years. Lloyd has owned restaurants, done iron work, but most of his life was spent doing what he loved do [sic], pursuing a career in the country music field. He had a distinguished reputation in the country music business and was recognized by his peers as \"The Chaplain of Country Music.\" He served the Lord as an evangelist in winning and comforting many souls along the way. He notably worked with the T. Texas band and recorded several hits, including \"Bumming Around\" and \"Deck of Cards.\" He is survived by two daughters and one son, Sheila Wisher of Missoula, Kandee Pierce of Spokane, Wash. and Monty Dugger, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
