    • Biography: Giles County, Tennessee, USA;
      Callaway H. Tidwell, Esq., a prominent farmer and stock-raiser of the Sixth District of Giles County, is a son of Vincent and Phebe Tidwell and the grandson of Isaac and Elizabeth Tidwell, who immigrated to this Sate from South Carolina and settled in this county in the early part of the eighteenth century. Our subject's mother was the daughter of Silas Rackley of South Carolina, who came to Tennessee at an early date and settled in Lawrence County. The parents of our subject were married January 10, 1817 and their family consisted of eleven children: Callaway H., Jane E., Silas, Elizabeth, Charles W., Darling M., William G., Thomas B., James P., Melissa A. and Andrew J. Callaway passed his youthful days on the farm and secured a practical education in the country schools. In 1841 he was united in marriage to Leah Tucker, a native of Giles County, born February 17, 1825, and the daughter of Anderton and Stacy Tucker, natives of North Carolina, who immigrated to this State at an early day and made their home in this county. To Mr. and Mrs. Tidwell were born eleven children: Nancy J., Margaret A., Stacy E., William C., Martha C., Vincent M., Phebe M., Alice N., Mary W., Charles W. and Ozro H. Our subject settled where he is now living in 1874, and his farm consists of 500 acres of excellent land, all well improved and a part of the same in a high state of cultivation. He also owns 600 acres more, all well improved, in other parts of the county. He has been very successful financially, as he started in life with very little of this world's goods. He was elected magistrate in 1845, and has held the office in an able and capable manner. Notes:

    There is one MILLER in the 1880 census that is unmarried and has children whose mother was born in TN: 1880 Howell Co MO census: 345-341, Myatt Twp MILLER Ira, w-m-m, 48, farmer IN IN IN Tennessee J., w-f-s, dau, at home MO IN TN Margaret E., w-f-s, dau, at home, MO IN TN Thomas C., w-m, 14, son, farm labor, MO IN TN James C., w-m, 11, son, farm labor, MO IN TN Robert T., w-m, 4, son, MO IN TN

    This last son would have been around the right age, if Martha died in childbirth. All speculation, however. The eldest daughter being named Tennessee J. would seem to support the theory - this could even be Tennessee Jane, after her aunt (Phoebe Tennessee CROWDER) and her grandmother (Jane Tidwell TACKER CROWDER).

    There are several MILLER families in the 1880 census, all from TN. Aunt Della also indicated that several families moved together from Giles Co Tn. The MILLER family might possibly have been among them. I find a marriage for Tennessee MILLER to Marion WILL on 14 Nov 1880 Howell Co MO - but they are not found in the 1900 census.

    I did find, however, an Ira R. MILLER, b MO April 1875. He would be the right age to be the same person as Robert T. MILLER, son of Ira MILLER in the 1880 census. The 1880 census in Howell Co frequently put the middle name first, used the full middle name and the initial from the first name (I know that is confusing, even as I state it -- and it causes no end of problem in using the 1880 census). The letter "I" could easily be confused with "T" in transcription. I would guess that this is probably the son of Martha TACKER and Ira MILLER. The one with whom she may have died in childbirth. Particularly in view of the fact that his son is named "Earl" - a name which Phoebe Tennessee CROWDER used for my grandfather. Also, his wife is "Ida", a name which Phoebe T. CROWDER used as well. As the half-sister of Martha, and the only one of the siblings alive or still in the area, Phoebe may have been very important to the MILLER children, and had close ties to them. This Ira is found in Myatt Twp with the neighbors that Ira Sr. had in the 1880 census. He may have stayed and taken over the family farm, while Ira and others moved elsewhere. I cannot identify anyone else in the 1880 census as being possibly one of this family.

    Tennessee J. MILLER married James M. MOORE 22 April 1881, Howell Co. Don't know what happened to the first marriage? Was that her?

      "Queer Pair of Calves. Joshua Patty has a curiosity out at his farm on Cane Creek, ten miles west of town, says the Poplar Bluff (Mo.) Citizen. It is a pair of twin calves which are slightly on the Siamese twins order. They are not handsome, but they are a little out of the usual line of bossy calves. From the brisket down half the length of their bodies the calves are one, their entire breasts being united solidly, the two bodies forming one well-rounded trunk. In order to travel they will have to stand on their hind legs and hitch along sideways as each will be in the other?s way to move forward. If they can balance nicely on their hind legs one might back up while the other moves forward. The animals are very well matched, are perfectly developed in every other way, and are a curiosity which has attracted hundreds of people to the Patty farm to witness."

      From the Mountain View Standard
      Mrs. T. N. Walker Phoebe Tennessee Crowder was born in Giles county, Tenn. January 11, 1858, died at her home near Mountain View, Mo., April 7, 1913, age 55 years, 2 months and 27 days. She was married to T. N. Walker December 30, 1877. To this union were born eleven children - seven boys and four girls. Three boys and one girl died in infancy. She leaves a husband and four boys and three girls to mourn their loss. She professed faith in Christ in the year 1878 at Walker Chapel church in Howell county, Mo., in services conducted by Rev. J. B. Rice and H. R. Walker, sanctified in the year 1901 at West Plains, Mo., in services conducted by REv. J. M. Robinson, presiding elder of the South Missouri and Arkansas conference of the Free Methodist church. Her children were all at her bedside except one daughter, Mrs. Della E. Warren of Oxnard, Cal. She was a great sufferer from tuberculosis but endured with great patience, ever mindful of others through all of her sufferings as she was in health. She like Paul of old, has fought a good fight, kept the faith and has gone to the reward of the faithful. Regardless of the rainfall she was followed by a large concourse of friends to Walker Chapel, where after a short service conducted by Bro. A. J. Koonce, the body was laid to rest to await the resurrection morn. A Friend

    Notes:

    Buried:
    Tom Walker and his wife Phoebe Crowder have a headstone at Walker Chapel, where both of their parents are buried. However, Phoebe's death certificate indicates her intended burial at Center Hill. Her husband was the informant, and the family had history at both churches, so possibly he misspoke, or he later changed his mind.

    Her obituary clearly states that "regardless of the rainfall, she was followed by a large coucourse of friends to Walker Chapel, where after a short service conducted by Bro. A.J. Koonce, the body was laid to rest to await the resurrection morn."

    Phoebe married Thomas Newell "Tom" Walker on 30 Dec 1877 in T. C. Bolerjack's home, Chapel township, Howell County, Missouri, USA.     • Biography: 1929;
      Biography of Alice's husband, Arthur W. Anderson, 1929
      "ARTHUR W. ANDERSON. On November 16, 1928, Oklahoma, forty-sixth State of the Union, became twenty-one years of age, the Congressional Act enabling it to become a State having been passed in 1906. But a score and more years prior to 1906 the pioneers were laying down the groundwork for this great State; and governmental action came merely as an official sanction of what, in great degree, already had been accomplished. The birth of Oklahoma rightly was even before 1889. Among the men who have grown up with the commonwealth none is worthier of record than Arthur W. Anderson, of Woodward, who came to the Cherokee Strip when sixteen years of age, and who has built his career in finance and citizenship around the progress of Woodward and its environs. Financier and citizen of dominant position, he is likewise a member of the bar, and has practiced the law continuously since commencement of residence in Woodward and admission to the bar, or through a period exceeding twenty-five years. He is today one of the foremost figures, as barrister, business man and public figure, in this part of the State, known widely in the Great Southwest. His record is of interest. Born at Wall Lake, Iowa, August 7, 1877, Arthur W. Anderson is a son of Oliver A. and Christina Anderson, both of whom were born in Sweden. His parents came to the United States in 1865, first located in Chicago, Illinois, later removed to Iowa, and in 1893 came to Oklahoma, filing on land in the Cherokee Strip, where the elder Mr. Anderson undertook farming, with prosperity. He is now engaged in ranching, near Canadian, Texas. Oliver A. and Christina Anderson had children: 1. Alexander B., of Wynoka, Oklahoma. 2. Ella, wife of F. G. James, of DeWitt, Oklahoma. 3. Arthur W., with whom we are concerned here. 4. Hortense, wife of George Patteson, of Wichita, Kansas. 5. Reuben F., county attorney, with offices at American Falls, Idaho. 6. Rex, deceased. 7. Richard A., of Little Rock, Arkansas, a road contractor. Arthur W. Anderson attended the public schools, matriculated in the Agricultural and Mechanical College, at Stillwater, Oklahoma, and from its legal department took the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1900. Admitted to the bar two years thereafter, he has practiced in Woodward continuously through the years succeeding to the present time, now being a leading figure in the bar and having held the local office of city attorney. In 1919, he was an organizer of the Woodward Building and Loan Association, of which he is secretary and manager. Since 1908 he has been a director of the Woodward Chamber of Commerce, in this connection accomplishing much of permanent benefit to city, county and State. For ten years he has served on the library board, and since 1913 has engaged in banking. A Republican, he is a close adherent to the principles of the party, and an influence in its workings in Woodward. Fraternally, he is affiliated with three important orders-the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and Ancient Order of United Workmen, in the last of which he holds the Degree of Honor. He is a communicant of the Methodist Episcopal church. Gifted and trained in the law, both in theory and practice through many years, financier whose ability has proven of sound worth to the Woodward Building and Loan Association, and banker whose reputation is wide, Mr. Anderson complements these directions of energy with the addition of works of citizenship large in scope. He writes interestingly, in editorial manner, and his writings have appeared in various publications of city, State and national circulation. He is alive to the needs of Oklahoma, and his mind and pen are quick to point the way toward advancement. One of his articles, "Taxation in Oklahoma," analyzed the State tax situation, showing the trends and necessity for remedial measures. This first appeared in the "Employer," July, 1928, and afterward was reprinted in folio for specialized circulation. Another writing, called "The Upward Trend of Taxation," appeared in the "American Building Association News," of national distribution, published at Cincinnati, Ohio. Still another piece, entitled, "Oklahoma: The Agricultural Empire of Tomorrow," first appeared in the Harper County "Journal," April 26, 1928, and was reprinted for more general circulation. Still another, appearing in the aforementioned Cincinnati publication, was, "The Need of National Advertising." In the third article mentioned, Mr. Anderson wrote in part: After the good Lord had made forty-five other States. He looked them all over carefully and decided that He could do better yet. He decided to put forth one supreme effort and make one State which would combine the virtues and advantage of all the rest. ?And then in the very heart of the United States, He built the forty-sixth State out of the very best of everything he could find, and He named it Oklahoma. He has a style of writing at once serious, practical, filled with a vision of the future, and with entertaining comment, and not a little humor. Thus, the points which he cares to make are driven home the more forcefully. Mr. Anderson married, June 12, 1912, Alice Patty."

    • RESEARCH:
      paragraph 10 After 1907, marriage determined a woman's nationality status completely. Under the act of March 2, 1907, all women acquired their husband's nationality upon any marriage occurring after that date. This changed nothing for immigrant women, but U.S.-born citizen women could now lose their citizenship by any marriage to any alien. Most of these women subsequently regained their U.S. citizenship when their husbands naturalized. paragraph 14 Happily, Congress was at work and on September 22, 1922, passed the Married Women's Act, also known as the Cable Act. This 1922 law finally gave each woman a nationality of her own. No marriage since that date has granted U.S. citizenship to any alien woman nor taken it from any U.S.-born women who married an alien eligible to naturalization.(11) Under the new law women became eligible to naturalize on (almost) the same terms as men. The only difference concerned those women whose husbands had already naturalized. If her husband was a citizen, the wife did not need to file a declaration of intention. She could initiate naturalization proceedings with a petition alone (one-paper naturalization). A woman whose husband remained an alien had to start at the beginning, with a declaration of intention. It is important to note that women who lost citizenship by marriage and regained it under Cable Act naturalization provisions could file in any naturalization court--regardless of her residence.
    • Anecdote: Abt 1864, Giles County, Tennessee, USA; Another of the stories that came to us from Della is the story of the Union soldier and the syrup pail. In her words, again (written to her daughter, Fartha Lonnem): "That syrup pail row you spoke of was between Grandma Crowder and a Union soldier. She had seen them take every vessel they could find to carry out maple syrup in, even the soap pail. But when they started with the last water pail she held on and in the struggle grabbed syrup and rubbed in his face and eyes then upset the pail pouring part of it on him, and was crying on the step as he went away with the pail. Then a Union soldier she had made a chicken soup dinner for when he came to her near sick and asked for it, came and asked what's the matter and she told him 'that man is carrying away the last pail I have to carry water from the spring'; and right away he called to the guy 'Bring that pail back to her or (drawing his 45) I'll shoot your damned brains out,' and he turned and brought it back. The Union army was camped 1/2 mile from the place and had run out of provisions and they took 40 head of fattening hogs and sheep and geese and cattle and long years after Grandpa was gone (I was 10 yr or so) Grand Ma got $500 in gold collected from the Govt by a lawyer A.W. Wills for collecting it. Grand Pa would have used some to keep well if he'd been paid earlier...."

    Notes:

    Lived in Ca and taught school. Around LA. Had children. Daddy says one of her sons may have been "Billy Warren" - who set a fire in Phoenix and ran away not to get caught. Her kids were wild. She made not a great marriage, was probably a card-carrying Communist, and on one trip home, was devoted to turning Daddy into a socialist. Grandpa's attitude: loving, but she's just aunt Della.

    Notes:

    His next older brother Neal road all night from OK to try to stop him from marrying what he thought of as "an Indian squaw". However, the marriage took place. Neal seemed to be prone to think he should be responsible for his siblings in this way, as he did the same thing to stop Aunt Ida from re-uniting with her first husband.

    The Social Security Death Index on ancestry.com shows a William Walker, b 19 Jan 1886, died April 1960. These are the right birth and death year for our William Luther Walker. It indicates that the social security number was issued in TX in 1956, and the number was 449-64-5169. There is a good chance that this is our Lute. It does not offer a last place of residence.

    Notes:

    Blanche and Roy were given the old Trask School to teach together for the school year 1913/1914. County school records in the county courthouse in West Plains contain a loose note for that year, which Roy signed - it indicated a future commitment to either Roy or Blanche staying with the children through the lunch hour. This is probably indicative of the fact that Roy and Blanche, newly wed, or about to be, disappeared together during the lunch hour.

      "In 1938, the state went to work on Highway 17 through Mountain View, Missouri, about a mile south of the farm. It was the middle of the depression and jobs were VERY hard to come by, and Earl T went to see if he could get work on the road crew. He approached the men where they worked, asked who was in charge, and was directed to the foreman, who was standing nearby. "I have a family to support and I'm looking for some work," he said. The work was extremely difficult physical labor, using picks and shovels and pure manpower to create the roadway. Earl T was about 5' 6" and weighed no more than 135 pounds. The foreman looked him up and down. "We already have plenty of good men on this crew," he sniffed, and turned away. Earl T walked away and watched a bit. He noticed a better dressed man also watching, and asked one of the crew who he was. "That's the head man for the whole road. He don't usually come down here." Earl walked up to this boss and repeated his request for work. The boss pointed at the foreman and said "You'll have to talk to him. He's the foreman." "I already talked to him, and that son of a bitch don't know a good man when he sees one," Earl answered. The boss grinned. "All right, why don't you get down there with them boys clearing rocks and let's see what you can do." They did not have to watch long to learn that Earl T was as tough as anyone one on the crew, and he stuck. As time went on, they needed more trained horse teams and wagons and they hired Earl to bring his team in. His team did not even need a driver, responding perfectly to voice commands from Earl. This meant Earl got a good raise, being paid for his team as well as his own labor. Earl T spent the rest of the summer finishing the road into town with the crew. When the job was over, Earl was voted "best man on the road" and given a new hat in recognition of his efforts. It was something he was always proud of. (In another variation of this story, Earl got the job by challenging the boss, saying "I'll go to work over there breaking rocks for nothing, and if I don't outwork the rest of them, you don't have to keep me or pay me.")

    • Narrative:
      Memory of Aunt Lena, written by her nephew William D. Walker (son of her brother Earl)
      AUNT LENA It was the 1930?s in the Ozark Mountain region of Missouri. School was out. The bus had let the children off by the mailbox and we had dawdled our way home. It was October. I had just passed my 6th birthday and was adjusting my way into the first grade. Jack in the third grade, Doyne in the 5th, Phyllis in the 7th, Mary in the 9th. The bus stopped, as always it did at the mailbox south of our house and we all scrambled off there at the cross-roads. One of which ran towards Walker?s Chapel to the west and the other a range line running north past our forty acre farm. Half a mile to walk on a warm autumn day. Half a mile with my siblings to talk and to play and finally to race round the corner and up across the yard to the house. Famished and hunting for bread. Quieting our clamor, mother said ?come in here and see what we came in the mail today.? It was a package all the way from California, It was from our Aunt Lena. Too big for the box, our rural mail carrier had driven the extra distance and delivered it to the house. Mother opened it there for all of us to see, and our excitement was hardly contained. It seemed to we kids in our little farm home that new things were never for us. But a package from Aunt Lena was sure to bring a gift or a token to each. A hand-me-down shirt, a package of gum, material for a blouse?. An October-Christmas The best of all days. A package from Aunt Lena A package from Aunt Lena who never forgot her brother Earl, her teenage bosom friend Grace, and the family that still lived in the little house on the Ozark farm with all of the constraints of life in that time and place. Aunt Lena, there were ten of we children and we all love you. Bill Walker
