History handed down in the family tells us that Ewell Smith was unfaithful to Ida, and after a separation, when Ewell wanted to reconcile with Ida, her brother Neal said something like "If you go back to her after giving her that disease, I'll kill you." While this may not be strictly accurate, it is likely that it is some version of the truth.

The 1910 census indicates that Ida and Ewell had been married for 4 years. Since they were both from Howell County, Missouri, it is reasonable to assume that they were married there. However, Missouri marriages are now at Ancestry.com through 2002, and their marriage does not appear in the database, making it seem more possible that they were married in Oklahoma, perhaps. [However, my own marriage in Missouri in 1973 also doesn't appear, although the marriage of my cousin, in the same month, does appear. Possibly not all counties are fully databased yet.
