"Prior Scroggins was born in Tennessee, came to the northern edge of what remains Madison County in 1818. There he married Mary Ann (Polly) Tatum and n 1823 they moved into our township. They had eight children when in 1833 Prior Scroggins enlisted in the Black Hawk War, contracted cholera and died. In 1836 Mrs. Scroggins married again and lived in Omphgent Township."
