Jerome Henry Mudge: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Skagit Valley Herald (Mount Vernon, WA) - Wednesday, March 26, 2008
    Deceased Name: Jerome Henry Mudge
    WA United States
Former Anacortes resident Jerome "Jerry" Henry Mudge of Lynnwood died Sunday, March 16, 2008, in Everett. He was born in 1919 in Richfield, Minn., to Ceylon Jerome and Beatrice Morlidge Mudge. Jerry was raised in Richfield with two brothers and a sister. While attending high school in Edmonds for one year, he learned a skill in shop class he used on the family's return to Richfield. With his brothers, a saw sharpening shop was started. The earnings assisted the family during the 1930s when employment was difficult. During the winter the boys shifted their focus from lawnmower blades to ice skate blades. After graduation from Washburn High School, he turned the business over to his younger brothers and attended art and tech school. An invitation to travel took him to Los Angeles, Calif., where he found work in carpentry. With the onset of World War II and a strong chance of being drafted, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Corps of Engineers and Army Air Corps as a pilot. He met his wife of 64 years, Vera Warren of Covina, Calif., after aviation training at Victorville, Calif. They were married May 5, 1943, in Glasgow, Mont., where he was stationed. Jerry served in the European Theater as a B-17 pilot, completing 25 missions. He completed his military service in the U.S. Air Force Reserve with the rank of major. After the war, he and Vera moved to Covina where they lived until building a home in Chino. A year later they moved to Detroit where Jerry honed his carpentry skills and Vera finished college. They returned to Covina before Jerry and his best friend Russ Hollister ventured north to Anacortes. The families followed in a few months to find Jerry and Russ building a boat in the living room of their rental house. Jerry enjoyed boating the San Juans and taking visitors salmon fishing. This led to running a marine-based business with Russ for a few years. Jerry worked as a carpenter and millwright in the Anacortes area until 1965 when the family moved to Edmonds and then to Lynnwood five years ago. Work frequently brought him back to Anacortes. Jerry loved to camp, particularly along the Washington coast at Kalaloch. Every fall he looked forward to the World Series. A portable radio was with him until a winner was declared. He was very involved in his children's activities, serving on the camping committee for the Camp Fire Girls at Camp Kirby and attending as many school concerts and open houses as he could. He was also a lifelong learner, taking classes at Skagit Valley College while his daughter was a student there. His love of art stayed with him all his life. He enjoyed oil and watercolor painting, joined an Anacortes art group and visited many Seattle art museums. With his friend Russ he took up photography and enjoyed taking classes under Matt Brown. Jerry was a member of the Edmonds United Methodist Church, Fidalgo Lodge 77, Anacortes Lodge and Edmonds Lodge 165 F&AM. He was preceded in death by his grandson Thomas Miller, brother C. Arthur Mudge and best friends M. Russell Hollister and Marvin Winans. He is survived by his wife Vera; daughters Nancy Coggon (Grant) of Anacortes, Laurie Nelson (Royce) of Idaho, Amy Miller (Daryl) of Tumwater and Elizabeth Jaquith of Edmonds; grandchildren Katie, Rachel, Jonathan, Sarah, Lily and Corinne; brother John Mudge of California; sister Alice Esse of Minnesota; many loving nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends Naomi Hollister, Kay Winans and their families. A memorial service for Jerry is at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 27 at Edmonds United Methodist Church, Edmonds. The family asks to honor Jerry, donations be made to the Edmonds UMC Food Bank or a charity of the donor's choice.
