  • Title Obituary of Archeleous Walker, digital. Privately held by Janis Walker Gilmore, [ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE,] Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
Short Title Walker, Archeleous - obit, 1866
    Source ID S1193
Text Two emails, 12 June 2009, regarding the Jacob and Archalus Walker, and the digital images sent by Jon Bjorkman of 1) obituary of Arch, 2) cemetery stone of Arch and 3) Dorchester Twp, Macoupin, data.

    Janis,

As you may have noticed, the copy of the obituary I sent you does not
show the name of the newspaper or the date of publication. I was just
now looking at some notes that Judy York gave me and saw that she
has the information from Archelaus' obituary. She gives the following
    reference for the obituary:

Bunker Hill Union Gazette Dec 21, 1866 pg3 - Macoupin Co., IL

    Hi Janis,

Sorry for taking awhile to get back to you (I have been out of town).

I know of two Archelaus and Jacob Walker pairs (brothers). I think you probably
are referring to the older set (i.e., Archelaus b: 17 Dec 1783 in Virginia,
    d: 12 Dec 1866 in Macoupin, IL, and Jacob b: abt 1793 in SC; d: 4 Mar 1855 in
    Macoupin, IL; m: Agnes McLean).

I am forwarding you the email (see below) that I received which had the obituary and
tombstone photo. I am afraid the obituary may be a bit disappointing (only limited
info), but the email also has some additional information that you may find useful.
On the other hand, I have a sneaking suspicion that you may have been the original
source. Are you the Janice Gilmore that I have heard about?

Please keep me informed about your progress on the Dickson Co. Walkers. Also I
would be most interested in any information that you would be willing to share about
    Jacob's parents etc.

I have yet to tackle the Dickson Co. Walkers - you are very brave!

    Jon

    Hi Jon,

Good to hear from you. I am sending a couple of things of interest that I got when I went to Macoupin County.

    The tomb stone is A. Walker b. 12/17/1783 d. 12/12/1866

He was buried close to Mary Sawyer Walker. (but not right next to her)

But the obit that I found states that he died on 12/11 @ 4 p.m. The paper was probably off a day ( I would believe the tomb stone.)

I also came across alittle history on Dorcester and one of the founding fathers was John Walker. Could it be yours??? I feel certain that the man name William McKimmey was my Martha Spence Walker's Grandfather.

I'm attaching this stuff and as I find more, I'll send. Let me know what you need from Texas.

    Take Care,

    Debbie

    Hi Cousin Debbie,

I was quite delighted to receive your email message. It is always
nice to discover another relative. I gather you descend from the
Texas branch of Walkers. I will have several questions for you about
them because I have many loose ends there.

The short answer to your question is that the information I have for
the ancestors of Jacob and Agnes is somewhat speculative (actually the
connection to Jacob and Agnes may not be entirely secure either). Most
of what I know comes from a very helpful lady by the name of Judy York.
She is an expert on the Walkers of Macoupin County Illinois. Here is
    her email:
    kron1636@aol.com
I think she is the one that made the connection to the Walkers of
    Dickson Co., Tennessee. See
    http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/TNDICKSO/2002-11/1038075876
In the information she sent me, she credits Janice Gilmore
    http://www.howellcountymo.com/index.html
with information indicating that Elijah Walker and Mary Elizabeth
"Piney" McGill are the parents of Jacob.

My connection to the walkers is via my great grandmother Jane (Walker)
    Clark,
daughter of John McLean Walker. I only recently obtained reasonable
    evidence
that Jane was indeed the daughter of John McLean Walker - she is
    mentioned in
the Will of Dinah Moore's brother. So I am now reasonably sure of
    this connection.

I just now saw that there is a Walker DNA project, and you are listed
there! So does the DNA support Elijah being the father of Jacob? I
    am most eager
    to hear what you know.
