The DeBoard Family By V. Manning

Roley Robert DeBoard was born November 24, 1892 in Mountain View, Missouri, the first son of Snowden Shelby DeBoard and Cora Emma Roush. He died in 1977 and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Whittier, California.

He first came to Oklahoma in 1905 with his parents and sister Minnie. They settled one mile west of Stone School house on a farm. He went to school at Stone until the family moved to Agra. He loved pole vaulting and held the county record for several years. Everyone went to Stone School for sings and Roley paid a boy five cents to save a seat next to Lula for him. On Dember 3, 1916, they were married at the Key home and went to live in a log cabin four miles north of Chandler. Their first child, Virginia Blanche was born January 6, 1918 and Allie May, two years later across the road.

Roley had a meat market next to Egbert Hotel and bult a home north of Bays Grocery. Through the years, he had many fun jobs as we kids called them. He sold Chevies when they first came out, ran a skating rink, ice cream factory, dairy and delivered milk and a grocery store.

In 1926, some one took us to Odeon Theatre and when we came back there was a baby girl named Cora May. Allie didn't like it at all, for she had been the baby for six years. Roley had built the two homes at 1015 and 1017 Allison Avenue.

Roley and Lula loved kids and during the depression took in several who needed homes or a place to live during school. Roley wanted nine boys but settled for three girls. We played football, basketball, baseball and boxed. Virginia remembers boxing with Nelson Hargroves one time and being knocked out.

Roley stressed education all the time and his daughters took his advise and took subjects every year at some college or school in California.

When two daughters married; Virginia to Egbert E. Manning in 1937 and Allie May to Albert Freeman Smith in 1939, they all moved to California. Lula, Roley and Corky decided to move too and sold everything moving in 1941. He worked for Urich Gas Stations during the war and bought old apartment buildings and fixed them up. He rode a bicycle every where and one time he rode five miles with ten thousand dollars in his sock to buy another apartment building. He was a member of the Orthadox Presbyterian Church of east Los Angeles, California and helped build the Church and Sunday School building. Several times we caught him on two story roofs working away. His bicycle was stolen while he was working at church and at the dedication, he was presented with a new ten speed bicycle. Lula died in 1970 and his buried in Rose Hills, Whittier, California.

Roley spent his last years between Oklahoma, living on the old Manning farm with Virginia and Egbert and California with Allie and Smity. He loved visiting with old friends in Chandler and Agra. He had a big garden farm at the Mannings.

One of Lula's tales is baking biscuits for the first time after they were married and she made so many she went outside and buried them. Roley loved wolf and coon hunting with his hound dogs. He told us of one dog; that all he had to do was whittle out a board and show it to the dog. The dog would go out and bring an animal that size until one day Lula put the ironing board outside and Roley never saw that dog again.
