    Text Hello,

Good to hear from someone related to my Tidwell line. Would love to learn more about Charles Wesley Tidwell's sister, Jane Eveline Tidwell, and her descendants -- anything that you would like to share.

My great-grandfather, Charles Wesley Tidwell (1829-1906), was married twice, both times after the Civil War. He lived with his parents in Lawrence Co., TN until the Civil War. He was born in Giles Co., TN, but the Vincent Tidwell family was in Lawrence Co. by 1860.

This Tidwell great-grandfather was among the first Confederate recruits out of Lawrence County. After the Civil War, Charles Wesley Tidwell married his first wife, Sarah J. Richardson, on 26 Mar 1868 in Carroll Co., TN. They had three children, all born in Lawrence Co., TN: Malinda "Lennie" Jane in 1870, Frank M. in 1871, and Charles Wesley Tidwell, Jr. in 1873, before Sarah J. died. Do not know where she is buried, but it is most likely near where they lived in Lawrence County, District 15.

Alford/Alfred. D. Wiley is the father of Harriet J. Wiley, the second wife of Charles W. Tidwell. They lived in the same district.

The story was passed down in our family that widower, Charles Wesley Tidwell, rode up to the Alford D. Wiley farm and asked Alford's daughter, Harriet Jane Wiley, to marry him. The story goes that she rode away with him and the Lawrence Co., TN records show that they were married at West Point in Lawrence Co. on October 1, 1878.

Harriet Wiley Tidwell helped rear the children from his first marriage and she and Charles Wesley had these children of their own: Emma Ann in 1879, Henry and Lucy in the early 1880s, but both died as children -- then they moved to Giles Co. and had more children: Edgar Samuel Hardin Tidwell in 1888, Lizzie Mae Tidwell in 1891 and Joseph Johnson Tidwell (my grandfather) in 1895.

In part, Charles Wesley Tidwell's 1906 obituary says:

    Chas W. Tidwell

Chas. W. Tidwell died at his home in
the Chicken Creek locality Monday, in
the 77th year of his age. He had been
in failing health for the past year.
The burial was at Mt. Moriah Tues-
    day, Rev. Bease conducting services.
Mr. Tidwell was one of our best and
most substantial citizens. He was a
member of the Methodist church nearly
all his life, and the Masonic lodge, and
was one of the survivors of the War be-
tween the States, having faithfully serv-
    ed in the Confederate army.
    .
Charles Wesley Tidwell is buried at Mt. Moriah Presbyterian Cemetery in Giles Co., TN beside his second wife, Harriet Wiley Tidwell (my great-grandmother). I visited his grave with my grandmother, Mabel Pillow Tidwell when I was a teenager.

My grandfather, Joseph Johnson Tidwell (1895-1962) was only eleven years old when his father, Charles Wesley Tidwell, died in 1906, but his mother, Harriet Wiley Tidwell, lived until 1934 and told him many stories about his father. She also gave him the portrait of his father, Charles Wesley Tidwell, Joseph Johnson Tidwell married Mabel Clara Pillow in 1914 and they had 13 children, 11 of whom lived to maturity. Their oldest daughter, Louise, is 91 years old and still living. She has an excellent memory for all the old family stories and has passed them on to her children, nieces and nephews.

So you can see that your information about Charles Wesley Tidwell (1829-1906) dying the in the Civil War was incorrect, thankfully so. There are several articles in the Giles County, Tennessee Heritage Book and the soon-to-be published Lawrence County, Tennessee Heritage Book in which information about Charles Wesley Tidwell is mentioned -- ancestors and descendants are mentioned, some with accompanying photographs.

Hope to hear from you again.
    Sincerely,
    Joyce Pardon Danek
